Garage
My roads are so pot-holed/patched around here, there's not a smooth stretch of pavement where I could stand chance to feel the vibration without truly concentrating on it.
I guess it worse in some vehicles, and some owners are more sensitive to it (and more concerned about it) than others. For me, based on what I've learned about this topic on this forum, it's not worth my time to bring it to a dealer. They'd probably just do some transmission computer upgrade and screw up my perfectly functional Renegade.

If it's not bothering you, I'd ignore it. I've put 36k miles on it that are almsot entirely in the range where it happens. SO I notice it a lot, but I ahve had noreliabiliyt issues related to it. Other have travelled more miles, probably engaging the behavior less, and no complaints of failure.

I've jsut chalked it up to it being the sound of the AWD system. It wouldn't be the first. An audi a4 with torsen diffs made all sorts of AWD nosies in use.

Also, having done some traveling with my renny, there are some areas I visited where the natural topography and traffic conditions really didn't set it off much.

Hi. I have been told that my 2.0 Ltd 4wd goes into 2 wheel drive at around 30 mph is thus true as I have posted my rumble noise at around 30mph and my cars been with the dealer since last Oct trying to correct it. The original mechanic said my renegade is 4wd up until 70mph! Someone is not telling the truth. So I am being told that the rumble noise that everyone is experiencing is just the rear disconnect happening at 30 mph. Can someone please shed some light on this please.

Have you got ant potholes very hard..does sound get better or worse when you turn left or right.. if it's get worse in only one direction as you drive it could be wheel bearing...I hit curb at 40 mph and knocked it all out of alignment and damaged my wheel bearing..not covered under warranty because I caused the damages..

They both are telling the truth, kind of.

The renegade's system, when not forced into 4wd mode by the driver, will follow it's algorithms and sensors in auto mode. By default, when starting from a stop, all wheels will be driven. Then at some speed it will ago to 2wd. That speed is supposedly ~30mph and where the 30mph noise comes from. When that happens, the wet clutch in the rear drive unit is supposed to be fully disengaged, the noise comes from that process being done incorrectly for the vehicle and the only report of the noise being fixed was due to FCA engineers dropping a custom calibrated firmware on their renny.

The AWD system, even if forced into 4wd mode, will cut out at highway speeds for economy and durability. I have heard that happens ~50mph. The tech says 70mph. I suspect it is less than 70mph or there wouldn't be much in the way of gains in economy.

The noise being discussed here is not a bearing.

My Renegades rumble has been fixed, it was in the dealership from last October to last week.
the work carried out:
In order..

• Transfer box motor
• Transfer box
• Rear diff unit
• Rear diff software (via Italy)
• Gearbox

• Awaiting fitment of a prop shaft

• Have re- ordered another transfer box and rear diff and transmission control unit at Jeep Technical request

that was in may, the car is now rumble free and im not really sure what fixed the problem and dont really care, all i know is that after years of owning a lot of different jeep models im done with the brand and will be trading the car in at the earliest opportunity.

Good luck with all your rumble issues i hope it all gets sorted out.

I wanted to throw my 2 cents in. I have noticed what happens is sometimes it gets stuck in 5th gear and doesn’t want to shift down without slowing down further until the point it half risks stalling perhaps, then it will shift down to 4th and then 3rd etc. Every time it happens I pop my 2018 Latitude into “manual” and yep its “stuck” in 5th again and shift it down and pop it back over to normal. Doesn’t happen often, usually its one of the state highways that in certain cities become a street then back to highway so I have to slow way down once I enter that city/town, I think the Renegade just goes “what the frick?”

Hello RoninCrowley,

If you decide to visit your local dealer regarding you vehicle occasionally getting stuck in gear, please send us a direct message. We would be more than happy to provide additional assistance.

I would if I had video evidence, as i know my dealership of purchase would most likely shrug me off as “our mechanic can’t duplicate the problem”. I know how it occurs almost for certain, but would need lights to agree to be certain.

I'd have to see what you are talking about, but I don't think it's broken, just the 9 speed and the firmware fixes to avoid certain problems. For fuel economy, it will try ot get to 5th as soon as possible. Because the 4-5 shift is one of the ones with a dog clutch, it takes longer. Based on owner complaints some things were changed about the firmware's shifting strategy. A couple of things that it definitely does differently now is if it detects deceleration, it avoids a downshift for longer, especially the longer shifts that involve a dog clutch, so that you are at least in a gear if you get back on the throttle. It'll also hold gears longer before upshift under certain conditions compared to early revisions.

In general, it has always been willing to get into the area of lugging the engine to hit the right numbers for fuel efficiency. I suspect owners would be happier if they just bumped up the target cruising rpms a bit and avoid getting into that near lugging zone. But I suspect that would worsen their problems with the EPA.
