Karl Milhon I'm new so can't post links, but Wow, that Prolight is nice. I'm impressed, once I found the English translation. I see a dealer in Michigan, but might be cheaper to get it in Canada at their dollar going for 1.34 per American 1.00 right now.

I used to tow with a Subaru Forester (Pre-2010) at 2400 lbs so became quite knowledgable on light pop ups. This Prolite is awesome.

Of course the old go to is Livinlite (google it) These are all aluminum and you can get a good size one with two bunk ends at 1,000 lbs or less...as long as you have deep pockets, although you can find them used pretty decently priced if you are patient. And they are virtually indestructible so last forever. You can always replace tenting.

Then there are the motorcycle versions. This company "Aspen Quality Trailers" google it, has been around awhile and I've seen one up, pretty nice.

obviously, the lighter the better particularly if you got a kid or two or big dogs. BUT, the above ones are it. And Frankly, if you have 16K you can get one of those Pro Lites and that would be the cat's meow of light travel trailers, all things considered for two maybe three if one was small. You want to rough it but still sleep four comfortable, I'd go livinlight, both the above are under 1,000 lbs. The motorcycle ones are extremely light, but can resemble chinese puzzles when putting up or down.

Mud Pie Okay, I'll be the nay-sayer...

Unless I'm on the Serengeti in Africa and I want to somewhat avoid maneaters, WHY would one want a tent on the roof of your vehicle ? I just don't get it.

There is one guy in my neighborhood that has a Wrangler all decked out like he is leaving for a safari in the morning. Full length safari rack, a 2nd spare tire on the roof, Hi-Lift jack, spade shovel, axe, TWO 5 gallon water cans, TWO 5 gallon gas cans, a container of what-nots, enough off-road lights to illuminate Yankee Stadium, lift kit and huge tires. And he drives it to....work. I've never seen so much as dust on it, muchless mud. He's taking about re-arranging stuff so he can add a roof top tent on it.

I know, I know, his vehicle, his money, his rules. But I can't help but think how horrible his mileage is. He has a 65 mile per day commute just like I do.

Back on topic; what is the advantage to having a roof top tent besides the "wow" factor ? It could be said because of bears, but I've been camping my whole life and have had bears wander through my site, never had one tear into my tent or even sniff my tent.

That's only when driving. I think most of the Roof Top Tents weight between 100-150 lbs so you're good for driving. But when parked, the roof can handle much more weird. Probably at the very least, 500-600 lbs, maybe more
