3 questions about the 2017 trail hawk console/radio/stereo

539 Views 14 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  joeclose1964
Hi , here are my 3 questions:

1) How do I stop text messages from displaying on the console? every time I get a text, my music stops playing while the console reads the text to me...
2) Whenever I plug my phone into USB1 to charge the phone, the console stops playing music from USB2 and trys (and fails) to play music from my phone...How do I get the console to stop trying to play music from USB1 when I plug the phone into USB1?
3)when I make or receive a phone call, I cant hear anything (its very faint) so I turn up the volume 1 tiny lit notch and the volume goes WAY up! then I have to turn it down to a normal level...how do I fix this?

Many thanks

and enjoy the forum!

Sounds like you need a software up date to me.

I probably do need a software update and there is one coming in mid-April. however at least the first of my 3 questions sounds more like a setting that need to be turned off..
Whenever I plug my phone into USB1 ....
Welcome :)

USB1 isn't a charge port. You're linking your phone to the Jeep, and all of the things you're experiencing are a result of your phone merging with your Jeep and doing phone things on the uconnect screen.

Do you have Apple or Android?

its android. i understand that the phone is trying to merge with the jeep, i just dont want it to, just want to charge the phone...
You need to disable Android Auto on your phone.

If you want to have USB charge only, the most certain way is to put a cig lighter charger in the socket.

great suggestion, thankyou
Mine is a 2016 and connecting to the USB socket either in the front or the glovebox was a PITA so I have a USBC charger connected to the cig charger (via an extender). All the connections to the jeep for music are via bluetooth and it all works together and plays very nicely. I have a Brodit holder on the dash, so I can use the navigation on the phone (as the Jeep satnav has no meaningful upgrades available now) and of course Jeep pulled the updates/support for uconnect live app, although the Apps button on the unit still functions allowing access to Jeep Skills, which is worth having. I am guessing its likley similar in Oz.
on my phone i went into the android auto app and turned everything off, unfortunately it made no difference to my first or second issue.

unless anyone can advise of a setting on the head unit, then I may have to resort to the cigarette lighter option to help with my 2ns issue.

still hoping someone can tell me what setting to use on the head unit to stop the text messages coming through..
USB1 isn't a charge port.
It may depend on the year, and/world market.

On my 2021 U.S.-market Trailhawk, USB1 (in the front center console) definitely does charge, as well as connect to Uconnect through Android Auto.

My USB2 is in the center console in front of the back seat. I know I can play music through it from a USB drive; not sure aboubt charging or Android Auto connection...
Sure, all USB ports will charge. It's easy to forget that USB was designed as a data transfer standard, and where part of the specification includes 5v power, it can be used to charge devices.

It's not that Jeep have added something to what looks like a "charging port". It's the other way around, phone manufactuers have been using a cut-down version of USB data port to provide power only for so long, we can easily assume that that is what USB is for.

I should have said it's not a "charge only port".

Hi everyone, irrespective of what jeep should have provided and what phone manufacturers should have done, what I would like to know is:

1) how to I use the USB 1 or USB2 ports as a charging point only for my phone, as I dont want my phone to connect/interact with the stereo in any way via USB1 or USB2 (other than to provide a charge)?
2) how do I stop text messages appearing on the stereo whilst still having blue tooth on, on the phone?

So far the suggestions that might work for question 1 are using the cigarette lighter to charge the phone. Any other suggestions?

Many thanks

Get a charge only USB cable, also known as data blocker cable.

OK, you've touched a nerve with me. I've often wondered something similar, but more-extensive.

First, we have to know what you've got. Which radio system?

I've got a 2021 Trailhawk with the Uconnect 4C Nav. It's got USB1 in the front console; and USB2 in the back of the center console.

I'm asking because we need to understand that in order to compare notes.

I usually don't want my cell phone to connect with Uconnect in any way when it's plugged in to charge. Specifically I don't ever use Bluetooth for phone calls -- I just don't do a lot of calls at all.

I do have Android Auto, and I do sometimes use that -- like for offroad navigation using Gaia GPS (an app on my cell phone) on my larger Uconnect screen. It connects data-wise through a USB cable.

Other than that, I usually listen to the radio (SiriusXM sat radio) when driving. I do have a lot of MP3 files on a tiny drive plugged into my USB2 port, so I don't need a cable for that. I do want the option of being able to use my USB connection for music from my cell phone, though.

So while georgef's solution of a charge-only USB cable might work for you, it wouldn't for me.

I'm always confused as to how to set things when I plug in the phone for whatever reason. Usually I can figure out how to do what I need to through trial-and-error; but then I can't remember next time how to do it. Whether it's through a setting on my cell phone, and/or through Uconnect (through the phone pairring/connection settings), and/or through Android Auto. For instance, I've found that Gaia GPS only works GPS-wise when I use the Renegade's GPS antenna only, and with the location turned off on the cell phone. And it's always a hassle to figure out how to do that.
