Can someone please explain how you change the gears on a 9 speed automatic? I know it might be a dumb question for some! But I've had a straight drive and automatic. So if I don't want to use the automatic and want to have some fun with the nine speed how do I change gears since of course their isn't a clutch! Thanks for your help!

Not dumb at all since all the car makers use something slightly different.

You go to manual mode by pulling the gear selector to D as you always do.
Once the Reny is in D, pull the selector sideways towards you.
It is in a backwards " L " shaped slot, so it will physically move to the left.

It is now in manual mode. If you look at your instrument cluster, it will tell you what gear the transmission is in.

The gear shifter will now move like a joystick forwards and backwards.
Tap it backwards to go up a gear, forwards to go down one.
The bezel is marked - and + on the left side for this reason.
ETA: once you want to go back into automatic mode, simply move the selector back to the right.
You can do all of this while the jeep is moving at any speed.

Quick question for you, Incognito: When we're in manual mode, can we start moving from a stop with it in 2nd? I played with manual during a test drive, and the vehicle seemed to want to stay in 2 when it stopped. I asked the salesman if it was OK to start from 2 rather than 1 and he said yes, but he also told me not to go to manual from auto while the vehicle was moving. He was so poorly informed about other aspects of the Renegade that I wanted to check with someone who knows more about it.

By the way, the manual shifting was fun but required only a very light touch, and my left foot kept wanting to get in on the action! It's great to have the option to go manual, though.

You can switch from manual mode to auto mode at any time, moving or stopped. My Trailhawk always starts in second gear unless I manually select first (or it is in rock mode). Other trims likely start in first gear.

As bwbike said, Trail Hawks always start in 2nd gear unless in rock mode.
This is because the TH has a deeper axle ratio than other Renegades.
All other automatic transmission Renegades start in 1st, like most other vehicles.

You can switch to manual mode or back to auto mode at any speed and any throttle position che.
Furthermore, while moving it goes into manual mode in the gear the auto mode is currently in.

This is why if you have a Trail Hawk sitting at a stop it will be in 2nd when you go to manual mode.

An example of switching back and forth between auto and manual modes in a TH:

To hole shot the punk sitting next to you at a red light, switch to manual mode.
Tap the gear selector forward to put your TH in first gear.
Put you foot to the floor and accelerate from the red light far faster than that fool ever thought your TH Renegade could go.
As you reach maximum RPMs in 1st gear, slap the gear selector to the right putting it back in auto mode. Let off the throttle when you see fit.
Point and laugh at the punk all the way to the next red light. >:D

All other automatic transmission Renegades start in 1st, like most other vehicles.
I believe that is correct when discussing US Renegades. But in Europe you get the 2.0 litre diesel (103kW) with the 9-speed low, and I believe this transmission is identical to the one in the diesel Trailhawk, except that Rock mode is missing.

In Brazil there are the paddle shifters for Jeep Renegade 2.0 diesel 4x4 Longitude and Trailhawk.
In Europe Fiat 500X also has optional paddle shifters for 9 speed automatic.

The management software when in manual sequential mode will automaticaly change gear if out of programmed working rpm range (= will not stall).

For Brazil there is also a Jeep Renegade version with a 6 speed automatic gearbox.
