Can anyone tell me more about the huge plastic box behind the RVM?

My state only requires 2 mirrors in any combintion so I usually remove the inside RVM. Increases visibility and keeps me from obsessing on the idiot in my RVM who is so close up my pipe I can't even see his hood. Haters who need to comment can just move to another thread.

What's up with that mirror box?

I can't tell you what it houses, but I can tell you that my wife's Buick Encore has the same HUGE box behind it and I personally feel like it obscures too much of my natural sight line through the windshield. I guess I'll see what it feels like in this before considering a purchase.

Video cameras for the collision avoidance system. It's on all the prototypes, no idea if it will ship on the vehicles without that option. Only hint that that might be the case is it didn't make the list of Easter eggs for the Miami journalist dog and pony show, but then neither did some others.

After some research and thought, I've concluded that the box behind the mirror houses the Foward Collision Avoidance radar system. Here's why:

The only Renegades really shown are fully optioned. So I doubt we'll see Jeep showcasing base Renegades with just a rear view mirror.

Secondly, the box is behind a blacked-out part of the windshield negating possibility of cameras.

Lastly, the only part of the box visible from the front are two slots peeking out under the black part of the windshield. One must be for emitting radar, the other slot for receiving radar. Hence, its a radar setup.

So I think its a safety option that not all Renegades will be seen with.

We'll see soon just how wrong I am. :nerd:

Here is a zoomed in close up, you can see a masked opening in the black paint for one sensors, type unknown. Also, look at the bottom, there are two slotted openings, that may be the transmit and receive for the radar?

At first I agreed with you guy s that the box is pretty big and kinda in the way, but then reading on and hearing that it is most likely housing safety features, I figure that the box should stay. Small price to pay for the added safety features. I suppose if you got a Renegade without some of those safety features, then it might not come with the box behind the rear view mirror.

If you look at the Subaru Forester Eyesight system, similar technology, they are similar but different:

If you look at the Cherokee (KL), I believe they put the equivalent of the "eye sight" system in the grill below the bumper. Take a look at some of the walkaround videos and on some you'll see a round lense in the grill below the bumper.

The box seems in the way, but it only covers the blacked out chunk. The soul has a similar blacked out chunk, and in practice it is pretty unobtrusive. I'm a tall guy, so if it doesn't bother me, it should be pretty out of the way for most people.

A lot of the auto safety features aren't on off-road vehicles. My understanding is parting are sensitive the equipment and the rough natural of off-roading could cause issues plus, the system may kick in at the wrong time while off-roading.

Did anyone figure out what's in the box? If it's the radar then why is it not an option on the trailhawk

My guess is maybe the transmitter is in the mirror housing and the receivers are in the bumper. Perhaps since the bumper fascia is a different shape on the Trailhawk either the receivers would not fit or they were concerned about possible false detection or blockage liability when they get covered with mud.
