Adding adaptive cruise to my Renegade

Note - This project is finished

I have a 2022 Jeep Renegade Latitude. I am going to explain the steps to add adaptive cruise control. I am still waiting on the "Grey Cable" to do the proxy alignment but I will start with the buttons needed and how to add the buttons. I will continue this thread once I get what I need to do the programming. I had to order the cable pack that contains the grey cable from overseas because I couldn't find one in the states.

I will start off by saying my latitude has all the components needed to make adaptive cruise control work and all I need is the buttons and programming. You will need to verify your renegade has the forward facing collision camera and adaptive cruise module that cruise uses. These are included if your renegade has the forward collision warning system that auto breaks. My Latitude has that.

If you haven't done it yet please take the time to go through this thread and make a proxy backup

Also it is best to do a export of your current BCM settings. You can follow this post to do a BCM settings backup

You will need to order the proper adaptive cruise buttons for your renegade. There are two different styles. US market uses the adaptive cruise that has the far right button being increase distance. On the UK version it is maximum cruise speed. I messed up and initially bought the UK version. You will see it in the pictures cause I had already installed it and I am replacing with the correct US version. Here is the part number for the US adaptive cruise buttons. Ran me like 80 bucks with shipping. The picture does not look correct but it is the correct buttons.

Lets install them. The first thing you want to do is remove the negative terminal of your battery. It is the left terminal looking from the drivers side terminal. This will eliminate power to the vehicle so we can remove the airbag. Don't attempt this with power to the vehicle.

Now we need to remove the airbag. We do this with a thin philips screwdriver. Here is the one I used.

What you want to do is stick it straight up through the two holes on the sides like this picture. Trying to figure this out the first time I did stretch the holes. You do not need to pry or anything to get this to work. Just push straight up. I will include a picture of the slot you are trying to hit on the picture after this one.

You are trying to get into this slot and press up. When you hit the slot and press up that side of the airbag will release.

This is the airbag flap it is releasing.

Once the airbag is released. You will need to unplug the cables on the airbag itself. The first is these top two wires.

Next is the airbag cables you will use a small flat head to pry up the small red plastic clips.

Once you have released both clips the yellow connectors are easily removed

Now that the airbag is out of the way you will remove the rubber piece covering the nut on the streering column. Behind that is a 24 mm nut. Remove that nut.

Once that is removed do not pull the steering wheel off yet. You will need to unhook the wires going to the clock spring here. There is a clip on top of the steering wheel.

Now you can pull the steering wheel. Both times I did it my steering wheel released with very little force. If you can't get yours loose you might have to rent a steering wheel puller to get it to come off. I have had to do that on past vehicles. Make sure to feed the airbag wires through the slot in the steering wheel. Also the clock spring is the part behind the steering wheel. Do not rotate it or take it off because if it is in the wrong position when you reinstall the steering wheel you will have issues. You can move it left or right and they have a grey peg that puts it in the correct position but you don't want it to be one rotation off or your car will always think its turning. It is most noticeable in the backup camera cause it will look like you are doing a sharp left or right when you are driving straight. I made this mistake when I added a leather steering wheel to my ram.

This is the clock spring with the peg. You will see the column has a groove in it pointing up. The top of your clock spring will stay there. The grey peg on the right will line it up with your steering wheel so it isn't as critical as my ram was to get in the correct spot cause the groove on the steering wheel lines up with the groove on the column. Again make sure you don't rotate 360 in either direction.

Now let's install the buttons. First flip the steering wheel over to the backside. you will need to remove these 3 screws I have raised up and the screw I am pointing at

Now pry the left screw cover up and set to the side. This is if you are looking from the bottom.

Now there is one phillips screw holding on the rear radio control button.

Once that is removed pull out the radio control. You do not need to disconnect any of these wires from that control. The screw holding on the adaptive cruise cluster is a torx bit. It was one that was on my 10 and 1 klein screwdriver

When removing the buttons from the front of the steering wheel there are two pegs. Be careful not to break these. The top one kind of holds it in the steering wheel so pull it up and wiggle and it eventually comes out.

You will need to unhook this 4 wire clip to remove and install the new buttons.

Now reverse the steps to put everything back together with the new buttons installed. Once you get that done we will need to program it. I am waiting on the "Grey Cable" to do the proxy alignment before I do the programming. I will continue this thread after that.
Here are the before and after pics of the buttons installed.

Wow. That is a lot of work to do. We have it on our Chrysler Pacifica and I hate it!
I have it in my Nissan Pathfinder and love it. On the renegade the normal cruise works too if you don't want to use adaptive I believe.
Ya my Nissan does a great job of keeping distance and never ramps up. My renegade pretty well has all the options but it. The lane assist is hard to get used to. I know you can shut it off but I like it keeps me from drifting on long trips. Still feels weird when it turns you back into the middle of the lane.
Excellent write up and the pictures helped the process tremendously !!
Have you added it. I am still waiting on the grey cable I need to do the proxy alignment. It's coming for the uk.
Sorry if I misled, but no, I have not and cannot install it. My Latitude does not have all the options needed for that to work. My post was to commend you on the detailed write up.
Ok thanks. Ya it's still not finished. Hopefully soon Ill have it programmed in and tested
I finally got my gray cable tonight to do the proxy alignment for the change. Here is the cable pack I got off of ebay. Took several weeks to come in. The cable I needed was second from the fathest right and is light grey.

To do the programming you need to first disable cruise control and then do a proxy alignment.
Go into alfaOBD and connect to your body computer

Then go down to car configuration change

Then type in cruise control. It should say present, change it to Absent.

Now we will do a proxy alignment. It is right above car configuration change.
Font Material property Parallel Rectangle Number

Now hit start. You do this with just the odb programmer plugged in at first. It will prompt you when to plug in the grey cable.

Font Screenshot Rectangle Technology Number

This takes awhile just be patient. It will tell you when each steps completes succesfully.

Once you get to where it needs the grey cable AlfaODB will pop up saying to plug it in. Shut off the ignition and plug the grey cable between your odb programmer and the security gateway bypass.

Font Screenshot Number Document Rectangle

It tells you to turn your ignition on before hitting ok. All programming is done by hitting the start stop button without starting it. Don't put your foot on the break. At this time when you hit start/stop button you will get all kinds of errors on your screen. Don't worry about it until the grey cable step is finished. So once the grey cable is in press the ok button on your screen. It will write a few more steps and tell you it is successful.

Font Screenshot Terrestrial plant Rectangle Document

Now shut your ignition off and wait 15 mins to program the advanced cruise control.

After the 15 mins is up. I am not sure if 15 mins is necessary but that is what I was told so I am being safe.

Go back through the same steps above but when you do a car configuration change you will enable acc plus
so go to adaptive cruise control and select ACC and then start

Now follow the same steps to do a proxy alignment and you should be good to go. Again I waited 15 mins before testing it.
