I got my Renegade about a week ago. Thus far I love it, except for the fact that how does $26,000 NOT have rear cup holders?! But, that's a story for another thread. Lol

Any how, I visited 5 different dealerships to make sure I got the BEST price on my lease. At each dealership I asked whether this little 4x4 WILL go on the beach for real, or will only go on the beach on paper and in the brochure. Every single car salesman said it WILL go in the sand.

But now I can't help but look at it and think I may be the laughing stock on Smiths Point (for all you Long Island folk) when I bring my Renny on the beach and it gets stuck. Of course I'll have my sister there to yank me out with her "real" Jeep Wrangler.

So, will my Renegade (latitude) go on the beach? Should I upgrade to off road tires? Should I just dash my dreams of going on the beach with my sister and her Jeep?

Thanks everyone! :D

Joe linked my post.

My brother took the trailhawk to pismo beach for the weekend. They got stuck at around 30 psi. The regulars ther pull them out and recommended 15-20 psi. After that they were fine. I have videos of the Renegade off the beaten path and on sandy dunes. They had a blast.

They said there was a bunch of regular cars out there as well. So just air down. The regular cars didnt stray too far from the beaten oaths though. Just far enough out to get to a camp site.

What was the outcome !! From someone who also wants to drive on smith points beach with a renegade
W E L C O M E ! ! !
... to the forum.

The outcome... the post is 6 years old o_O

But yes, the Renegade does well on the beach, as long as the sand isn't too fluffy. :ROFLMAO:

3 responses above yours verifying that they are in fact safe in the sand and to air down your tires.... how much more do you need? I've been to the dunes a handful of times and saw a Honda Odyssey, Ford Econoline work van, CRV, Buick Roadmaster even!

Haven't taken the Renegade to Smiths Point (yet). Father-in-law didn't want to get all the salty sand up in it, whole 'nother story. I would take it in a heartbeat and feel confident. It's a lot lighter weight than the others. My wife and daughter have taken her old Toyota Sequoia and her '19 Honda Pilot out on Smiths Point many times. I bought the Staun Tire Deflaters they are preset for 18psi. Screw them on and by the time the 4th one is on the first tire is almost done. No sitting holding the valve in. So worth it! Bring the recovery stuff just in case. definitely bring your own 25' air hose and chuck AND a compressor in case. I recommend the VIAIR 88P as it clamps to battery, not relying on the thin "power port" things. Wife and daughter have had no issues (knocks on wood). They have used the Viair many times when the lines for the 2-4 hoses at beach were too long OR the compressor was down.

Renegade has the beach pass as it was the planned backup "recovery" vehicle for when wife and her friends go. If nobody else would be willing to help them, I'd be there in about 30 minutes.

Biggest thing AIR DOWN, drive sensibly, slowly, avoid the big ruts, coast to stop, not hard on brakes (creates a bump you need to go over), gentle turns (you are lower on air pressure).

Air Down by all means but at 18psi I would be thinking more of popping the tyre off the rim.

Would 24 psi not be a lot more comfortable? ie 3/4 thereabouts of normal road pressure?
Your not driving highway speeds anyway and should be gentle turns and stops. The 18psi gets a much larger footprint so you stay on top. Sand rules = gentle everything, start/stop/turn. If you start spinning, STOP you will only dig deeper quickly and add to headaches.

24 psi isn't enough to increase your footprint in the sand. Really need to be under 20. When I ran up at Silver Lake Dunes I would air down to 15psi and spend 3+ hours blasting around all over the place. Never had an issue. 15-18psi is where I would set them if you really want to get the most out of airing down.
