If your Renegade has run out of gas, you might want to open the driver's door, get out of the car and push with the automatic transmission set to neutral. Usually when this happens, you're standing outside the door and leaning into the cabin to steer. These conditions will engage the parking brake "safehold" feature because all of these conditions are met:

- Speed is below 1.9 mph (3 km/h)
- There is no attempt to depress the brake pedal, accelerator pedal or, on manual transmissions, the clutch
- Driver seat belt is unbuckled
- The driver door is open
- And, for automatic transmissions, the transmission must NOT be in PARK

If you're alone and trying to push the vehicle out of traffic, how do you avoid engaging "safehold" mode?

Nice ... quick answer!

Hit up the radio menus and put the e brake in maintenance mode.
Good thought ... What does putting the ebrake in maintenance mode actually do?? I saw that option and I was thinking: this sounds like something that should be on a "professional maintenance" menu or something.

Well option 1) alternator is not charging and you are driving. Car dies, coast to a stop, no juice, so no brake getting set on.

Option 2 is it runs down parked. Get a jump, go into radio menu and set it to not v engage automatically. That is an option if you are paranoid.
