Hey

This is my first post (aside from my introduction)

Apologies if it's in the wrong area or if there is a similar issue already being discussed (although I couldn't find one).

I have had my Limited 4x4 (petrol) for just over 5 months now. A few weeks ago I turned my car on a got this following Error messages:

- Side distance warning system failure
- Four-wheel drive failure
- ESC system
- Stop/Start failure
- Forward collision warning plus system failure
- Electric parking brake failure
- Injection/EOBD system failure
- Automatic transmission failure

This was pretty scary when all errors were flashing up.

I tried driving the car forward but there was very little power and the gears wouldn't change.

I called the Jeep roadside assistance. While waiting for them to arrive I tried starting the car multiple time and eventually the errors started to disappear leaving only 2:

- Start/Stop failure
- Injection/EOBD system failure

I tried driving the car and it seemed fine (aside from the 2 errors appearing on the dash).

By the time the roadside assistance arrived there were no errors (typical) and the mechanic did a diagnostic check to find that it recorded 6 'sporadic faults' but after he cleared them there where no further errors showing and he said it must have just been a software bug (and may be related to module software updates).

Later that day I was driving the car and this time the 8 errors appeared while driving on a dual carriageway. The car lost power and I had to try and drift to safety. I stopped the engine, restated and was then just presented with the start/stop and engine errors but was able to drive home.

I took the car into jeep to be repaired. They said that they couldn't find any issues and that they updated 5 modules so that must have been the issue and the car is now fine.

2 weeks later... we went camping. There car had been fine since taking it in so we felt safe driving to the coast.

An hour in to the journey the 8 eight errors appeared and the car lost power while overtaking on the motorway. This could have caused a pretty serious accident but luckily I'm pretty cautious when driving and always leave plenty of space when manoeuvring.

The problem then disappeared when restarting the engine but resurfaced 4 more times over the weekend and 3 more times on the motorway today.

I really don't know what to do as the problem is sporadic and Jeep can't seem to find the issue.

Has anybody else experienced anything similar?

Any ideas what can be causing this?

Thanks for taking time to read my really long post.

I don't have a Renegade, but this sounds like something that happened on two of my VWs (89 Fox and 91 Golf). In both cases the computer chip controlling the engine, fuel injection, etc. had failed and needed to be replaced. Engine would just die while I was driving, I would pull over, wait a bit, and then it would start again. Eventually it would die and stay dead.

Keith,

I don't know what laws are available in your country, but here in the states, individual states have laws in which if the dealer of your new car cannot resolve a problem in "X" number of visits to the dealer, the manufacturer is required to buy it back. In Georgia and Pennsylvania it's 3 visits, in Michigan it's four.

You probably need to check your warranty documentation and your local/regional/national laws on car sales and service.

It could be some rogue component flooding the can-bus network with garbage.. which can then cause a bunch of the attached subsystems to go WTF? I don't understand that.. something must be broken.

Given you call it petrol, I'm assuming you aren't in the US. SO no idea what the warranty deal is where you are, but you ahve pictures, you have a roadside call, it is happening repeatedly, it should be fixed.

Thanks guys!

I'm in the UK and have 3 years warranty I think (haven't read the small print though).

My main concern is that the problem may not be tracable if it isn't happening. I can see it going on and on and on...

Raz-o - Yeah, I think that's it's a dodgy component too. Really don't think it's a mechanical fault, although I've been reading a lot about problems with the 9 speed transmission....

Duck - You guys have it so good in the states. Me and my wife were over in the US last month and you guys actually have 'customer service'. In England sometimes it feels like people would sooner spit on you than help you :p

Michael - Thanks for the tip - will mention it to the Jeep service centre when I can get it booked in

I feel sorry for your situation and your screenshots are scary to me. If it's under guarantee, check with your dealership.
I hope to never get in these issues in future and that's the reason I've order a minimalist Renegade , no 4X4, no rear camera, no self park, no mysky roof, no 9 speed automatic....
Older jeeps like the 1996-2007 wranglers were without electronic and are still on the road today.
Too much electronic kills....I wish they were made in USA, no electronic, V6 powered.... like oldies USA cars.
Doesn't matter to pay for a premium price car but well built is what we want.

Good luck

1st nice trainers.
I think your problem is so bad, it's good. Meaning it's not a niggly little glitch you've got, it's a melt down.

Keep up with the pics and video's.
A lot of people walk into dealers with problems and talk in a roundabout way about a problem and dealer tries to fix the problem in a roundabout way. i.e badly.

Show the pics and video and say "fix that" period.

It's a computer problem so whether that's a chip, complete system or simply battery voltage dropping we'll see but you have solid case.
Remember in the UK a product must be "fit for purpose" or full refund/replacement. A stalling jeep is not "fit for purpose".

Just this morning I lost power and the traction control light came on. I was on dry pavement pulling out and making a left. No reason why traction control or any tire slippage should have occurred to trigger it. None too happy about it, and fear it's just the beginning of something bigger to come. Also it's only happened that one time and will be impossible to replicate to show a dealership what it's doing. So far anyway.

I posted a video of the problem happening while I'm driving if anyone is interested - shows all the errors appearing and the loss of engine power...

Holy crap, that's scary man! That could be something as simple as a bad/faulty ground all the way to a major melt-down someplace. Bad chip. Bad computer module. Who knows what!

I miss the days of yesteryear, where we didn't have a central computer managing [email protected] in your vehicle.

Good show taking pictures and video though. At least you've got something to give to the techs at the dealer.

Thanks for the advice/suggestions everyone!

I finally managed to get the Jeep booked in to the dealers (after 3 days trying).

The guy I spoke to seemed to take the issue a little more seriously that the last guy who booked it in. He said it 'sounds pretty serious' which is reassuring :-/

I made sure I get a meeting with the mechanic/engineer when I drop it off to show the photos/videos so at least it might help them diagnose the problem.

I'm gonna have to make do with the Fiat 500 courtesy car for quite a while as they're expecting it to take some considerable time to resolve :-(

Fingers crossed...

2015 Jeep Renegade randomly shuts down while driving!

I just returned from the Jeep dealer service department for the 4th time, and am frustrated that they don't know what is wrong with my Jeep Renegade and presently is unable to fix the issue properly. All they can do currently is resent the computer or do software updates which have proven to not work thus far. Meanwhile I am scared to drive it and hate that I have to stay in the slow lane in anticipation of when it will decide to shut down on me while driving. As Keith Marsh explained you will be driving along and out of nowhere all your service light will start cycling through flashing at you and instantly you lose power and have to immediately pull over to shut the vehicle off in order to access "limp mode" so that you can get to the dealer to have it looked at again. I will post a video below and apologize for the profanities.

WOW! I wasn't expecting a response! I have contacted a Chance with Chrysler resolution and do have a case #. I regret to report that he is almost impossible to get ahold of! He contacted me on a Monday afternoon and left a voice mail. I called the next morning left a voicemail and responded with when is a good time to get a hold of me since I am a student, which during this week was after 11am I was free everyday. I called for the next 2 days every hour on the hour with no response. It wasn't till I got to the dealer on a Thursday that he finally called me after the service manager left a voicemail to call. He gave me a line, something about we care but really there is nothing we can do then followed it up by I just want a free car, and he needed to speak with the service department at the dealer (NOT A GOOD RESPONSE). So being that I was at the dealer I said try calling them now, so we both hung up and haven’t heard from either one with a response. I left both of them a voicemail and thus far still no reply. In the 2.5 weeks that my Renegade has been at the dealer I have accrued rental car costs that supposedly Jeep will help me pay for, but nothing so far. In dealing with the service department and with a gentleman (George, who was the first contact I made with Chrysler company who was almost always available and would call back!) I felt like I was at least getting the support I needed working towards a resolution to this problem. Since the Renegade is presenting with continued problems (the same ones and progressively getting worse) and with multiple attempts to fix it, is not showing any signs of actually being repaired. This puts me driving in the slow lane wondering if it is going to lose power like it has and not being able to live my usual life taking trips mountain biking, snowboarding, and all the other life activities one lives on a normal basis. It is scary to get in this car and wonder if you might get taken out at an intersection, or in my experience a semi-truck who was behind me when my car lost power, if I hadn't had a shoulder to pull over onto immediately I would have been hit. I am paying for a car that doesn't work properly (I put 10k down!) if it can't be fixed I would like for Jeep to support me in getting either on that does or to switch to a Dodge with comparable costs. My husband and I have been owners of a Dodge Neon, Dart, and Journey and haven't had issues with any of them thus far, so I trust it. It is disappointing that the Renegade has had such issues, because I love the style, function, gas milage, and detail of the car. If there is someone who will give me better assistance with my case I would love to work with them Andrea, this past year of owning this vehicle has been a hassle. The more I look into the Jeep and especially with the year 2015 the more I realize I think Jeep has a huge issue with what was being produced that year and I got stuck with one of the issues. I would appreciate a reasonable resolution and would like to continue supporting your company cars even if it may not be a Jeep.
