So, I love this cargo basket from Thule, and I love their crossbars, but I don't love the crossbars' $500 price. Any recommendations for other locking crossbars that would suffice for this, instead?

There are many options for crossbars for the Renegade, none should go into the $500 range. Try looking around on the forum and see what others have gone with, or even just settle on one that you pick out yourself.
