I have a 2017 Renegade Sport, 6 speed manual. It has a little over 81K miles on it. Last Friday, I was driving on the highway, about to pass a semi and go up a hill, when I lost power. The car just started shuddering and could barely make it up and over. The service engine message came on and the engine icon was flashing. I coasted in neutral to the bottom of the hill, but the car was still shaking quite badly.
Checked oil, that was fine. While running it started to have white smoke out the tailpipe. Using the Fixd code thing, it came up with P0300 & P0304, cylinder misfires. It was still somewhat driveable. So we limped to the dealership.
Following Monday, they checked it out and found that the exhaust valve in cylinder 4 broke. The piece went into the cylinder and scored the inside. Dealership says that I need a whole new cylinder assembly!! At $2,350.00 USD, I'm trying to find out if this is a common problem.

Please help.

First time I’ve heard of this happening. Definitely a bummer!

I would go to an Engine Specialist in your area (unless of course you feel comfortable doing the work yourself) as the cylinder assembly on my ‘17 2.4L is only $350 (for example) not including gaskets from MoparFactoryParts.com and I’m sure you can get a better price than $2400.

Where did you find a "cylinder assembly" on that website? The closest I could find was a cylinder head assembly.

I believe that if "The piece went into the cylinder and scored the inside" that would require replacing the engine block.

Yeah, you’re right. I quickly looked up a “cylinder assembly” without much thought about it just to see what the part costs. I did price out the head assembly not thinking about the block. My bad. And for the life of me I cannot find a block either! I’ve found diagrams referencing them, but when I scroll down it skips it. On every website.

So I’m thinking boring the cylinders (enough to remove cylinder wall scratch), honing them, and installing new larger pistons/rings would be the way to go here. Assuming there is a machine shop close by.

The machine shop will most likely want you to deliver the engine to them (apart from the Jeep). I bet if you Googled “mobile mechanic” for your area that you could have one come to your home, bring an engine hoist over, and remove the engine for you and maybe even haul it to the machine shop (all for less money than a traditional shop would charge).

I believe all of this would be much less expensive than the $2400 that you were quoted. I could be wrong though.

Oh...first and foremost I’d definitely get a second opinion from a reputable shop in the area to see what they have to say vs the stealer...eh hem...dealership.

I did call a few other garages... they quoted over $3,000. I’m an employee of the dealership who quoted me, so I think I got the cheapest available.

That stinks!

You still might want to inquire about boring and honing the cylinders. Perhaps your dealership could remove and transport the engine to the machine shop for you. But, I’m still not sure where you can find larger pistons/rings. Might be a less expensive route rather than replacing the block, plus the added benefit of a larger displacement. 😁. Of course, if the machine shop or your dealer or someone could find the pistons and depending on the depth of the scratches. I’m assuming the scratches can’t be too deep and that a .060” bore would take care of it. Once the machine shop gets a hold of the engine they’ll probably only charge $50 a cylinder to bore ($200 in total). Honing can’t be much either.

I got to thinking that I personally wouldn’t talk with your dealer about boring and honing as they want to sell you a new block and the kitchen sink along with it, so I’m sure they’ll try and persuade you not to bore and hone the existing block. I’d talk with a reputable machine shop regarding it.

Considering there are a ton of these engines out there , even some with 1k on them .. why not buy a whole unit? I see them going for much less than what the dealer wants to patch the existing engine up...

I had almost the same situation. 2017 Renegade 6 speed manual, 50k miles. I was driving on the highway when the check engine light started flashing and the engine lost much of its power. I limped it to the dealer and in their final report they said the "edge of cylinder #3 was burnt off, zero compression". They replaced the cylinder head. Fortunately I was within the 60k powertrain warranty so I didn't have to pay for it, but it took over two months for the dealer to fix it, so was without a car for all of that time. What is the likelihood of something like this happening again? Can I trust this engine to keep going?

Curious what you all did to resolve.

Same issue. 2018 Jeep Renegade Sport 6-speed, 97k miles.

Dealership said would cost $12,000 to replace the engine. Asked about trade in and they said $500.

I am going to check around. Jeep still runs, just not well, so it can limp around for a while.

Thoughts?
