Dipstick not showing correct level

What stabilizer are you using?

most of them are thick, and generally a bad idea in engines designed for super low viscosity oils. I wouldn't want to imagine old school lucas stabilizer vs. the multi-air oil driven variable valve control system.

i give up. if the oil is at proper level five minutes after shut off, why won't it be at that level in five hours ????
COME ON JEEP SPECIALIST, that reads this site, WHY should there be a difference??
*sigh*
OK here, goes. Mostly speculative from working on other vehicles, but...

The real argument would be "why not have the dipstick calibrated to the volume you will see after waiting overnight?" The answer is likely because oil level matters a lot more these days than in the past, and having to wait 5 hours would be a giant pain for the mechanics, and annoy the heck out of a customer who doesn't want to wait.

Like a lot of cars, there's variable valve timing, and the system is operated by oil pressure. Instead of needing enough oil to lubricate the engine, you need enough to lubricate the engine and operate the variable valve timing system. In the multi-air system, it uses the oil to create a variable sized hydraulic spacer to effectively change cam profile. This uses more oil than most other systems that just use oil pressure to shift a multi-profile cam back and forth.

I suspect the oil sequestered in that system takes a while to drain out, and that the line on the dipstick is a "warm" reading that just represents the volume needed for engine lubrication. What might be useful is a "cold" reading line that measures total volume overnight after everything drains down.

But regardless of the why, the how is that at 5 minutes, the oil hasn't fully drained down, but that is the time frame the dipstick is marked for, and letting it rest can result in the full volume available, which isn't what the dipstick is graduated for, and thus can give a wrong reading.
