I have heard that a smaller version of the Escape is in the works for the States. I think they already sell a C-segment SUV in Europe. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

I personally feel like what sets the Renegade apart from its competition is its off road prowess. Otherwise there are a number of small SUV competitors with AWD.

My guess is you can tell I am a "TrailHawk or bust" Renegade shopper. I wish there were more small SUVs on the market capable of some moderate off-roading. I feel as though I am limited to the Renegade if I want a beefier suspension and skid plates on a small SUV. Maybe there isn't a big enough market for this type of vehicle?

I guess Ford could make a smaller version of the Escape. I'm not sure if it is really necessary though. I think that the Escape already competes in part. I think that Ford is trying to not get crazy with the amount of vehicle models that it puts out.

I think you are seeing enough jump in that coming here with the echo sport as is would be bad. If the market shapes up, I suspect that platform will get some serious tlc and brought to the us.

The problem with the new Escape, CX-5, CR-V, Rav4, and the Korean offerings is that what used to be semi-rugged SUVs have become aerodynamic crossovers. For someone to compete with the Renegade, they will need ditch the sculptured aero look for chunkier, more rugged styling and at least a hint of the associated capability.

And throw in a manual transmission offering on something above base models.

That is IT, exactly. Why oh why are there triangular windows, aerodynamic backs, etc.on the competitors that you mentioned. I love the Renegade because it is square and boxy - though I'm a little worried about overall cargo capacity - I like the old Escape and the "old" Liberty/Patriot type shape. I'm struggling to come up with an alternative if for some reason the Renegade doesn't pan out for me!

I like the boxy shape as well, with real rear quarter windows. The Forester's styling would work, and it is available with a manual, but the oil consumption problems have steered me away.
