This may not be an issue to some but today I was going to town and got a couple minutes down the road and realized i had left my wallet at home. I turned around came home and took my keys with me to unlock the house. I grabbed my home and went out and jumped in my car to head to town to get some food. When i got home i looked at my Speedo display and saw that it was saying keyfob not detected... This caught me off gaurd because i was like huh? the key is in here somewhere.. After about ten minutes of looking for the keys i decided to take my food in and come back out and look for them. I got to the door and the keys were hanging in it!! Soo apparently there is no security features in place for driving the car without the keys in it. Seems kinda strange to me

Strange, I have the key start one and had a flat key cut so I can take it supping, it will unlock the jeep and such but wont start the jeep. I wish it did as I HATE the key fob that came with the jeep.

They are not even Jeep tough, ruined one Keyfob with in 24 hours of owning the jeep. Will try the flat key again would be amazing to ditch the ones jeep gave us.

I tested this out before. I started the Jeep with fob in hand, left the fob back in the house on purpose and drove around the block. I was quite a distance away before the display warned me that the fob was not detected.

Very weird. How did you start it with the key in the door if yours is not keyless start?

Maybe thats a good thing. If you ever have your car taken from you by force at a stoplight, at least he won't be able to restart it later on.

Hi, Derrick:

Once you started your vehicle with the Key FOB, it will continue to run even if the FOB is not in the vehicle. However, once you turn the vehicle off, it will not allow you to re-start and a message will show that Key has left the vehicle. Hope this helps.

@JeepCACares Is this true even with remote start? ie. you start the car and someone can drive off without the key FOB ever entering the vehicle?

Figure this out. Wife gets in the car first and the FOB is in her purse. We have keyless entry so the doors unlock. I follow a few minutes later with a FOB in my pocket. I start the car. Which FOB is being accessed security wise to let the car start hers or mine ?

When you were in town did you keep the engine running?

If the car is already on you can drive it without the fob, however it cannot be turned on without it in the car. So if someone were to steal it while it were on they will have a 4 ton brick once they turn it off

Dear Royalblue:

Both Fob's are being accessed, security-wise, to start the car. Hope this helps.

Incorrect. I left the car running and exited the vehicle and it said "FOB has left the vehicle". I came back. Then the wife left the vehicle. It did not say anything about her FOB leaving. In actual fact the FOB closest to the steering wheel is the one that is accessed when there is more than one FOB present in the vehicle.

I have a 2015 Latitude with remote start.
When the Jeep is started with the remote start.
1) The doors remain locked until you unlock them with the key fob or by touching the door handle from the outside with the key fob present.
2) After entering the jeep you have to press the start button with the key fob present. if you do not have the key fob you cannot drive the jeep.

My wifes Ford Edge is the same way.

it only needs the key to start.

She has left me in the parking lot of a grocery store before to run in and grab something. Her key stays in her purse so when she hopped out it told me that the key had left the vehicle but never turned it off or anything. Not even when i was parked.

No.

Remote start doesn't turn the vehicle completely on.

You still need to hold down the brake pedal and hit the ignition button.

And, as others have pointed out, the doors are locked.

So, no, if you remote start your Renegade, random passerby's can't just hop in and go for a ride.

I don't understand the point of this.

If you both have a FOB, it's going to recognize both, but one will be selected as the "ignition" FOB at the time of start up.

If that key leaves the vehicle, it's going to declare the FOB isn't detected.

The other fob-carrier, could just turn it off, and back on, and with the cycle of the system the second FOB would then be the ignition FOB.
