Hello!

I have a 2016 Jeep Renegade 1.6 Multijet Longitude Diesel. I bought the car second hand from Arnold Clark as the second owner and it was a previous disability car.

So far my external temperature gauge has gone, my gear box stopped working and my sound system wiring needed redone causing issues with my rear parking sensors! Now my engine light is on along with the stop start and Autocare are telling me to take it to Arnold Clark for diagnostics. They cant take it in until mid December and I am reading a lot about battery issues causing this fault. Could anyone help and tell me how much Jeep batteries are? If inexpensive I can take it to my local mechanics who have had to fix all the other issues for me. Thanks in advance for any help or advice. I understand without the diagnostics it is difficult to comment.

do a load test on battery first. 2016 original battery? $64.00 for a walmart cheap or up to $200.00 for quality battery

Thank you for getting back to me! It is the original battery as far a Im aware. I dont know how to do a load test. Im not great with cars past basic maintenance like lights and fluids. Im in the UK so not sure prices are the same here but I really appreciate the response!

Apparently the failed external temperature sensor, housed under the wing mirror, will trigger the engine warning light.

Dealer will offer to replace the entire wingmirror to fix this for 拢100s. There is a thread on here how to dismantle the mirror and stick an equivalent thermistor component for a few pence.

But you'll need to get someone who knows what they are doing to do this.

Edit: Solution at end of this thread:

Most everything else is probably battery related.
Are the rear sensors after market or integrated into the car at the factory?

Hi Nev, the wing mirror was replaced and corrected the problem, although it never triggered an engine warning. I was originally told the wing mirror was covered by warranty but then had to pay because the only part not covered was the temperature gauge, which is fixed to the wing mirror.

The rear sensors were factory fitted with the car. They played up on and off and caused dash lights because my stereo wiring was frayed. This was fixed by local mechanics and the speakers swapped in the back and Ive not so far had any issue with that. The error message said Stereo unavaliable/park sense unavaliable. Hopefully that is now corrected.

The top row of my gear box stuck and I couldn't get the car into gear. It was deemed un-driveable at a local garage with nothing showing on diagnostics. It was recovered because they couldnt put it in gear to take to a Jeep garage. My warranty provider told me all parts of the gear box would be covered, then Arnold Clark Jeep charged me for having the car and told me there was no issue with the gear box and their diagnostic might have fixed it. Miracle cure that cost me 拢170.

So I have the engine/stop start lights now and I am really nervous to take it in under warranty. They keep telling me it is covered then Arnold Clark charge me and say it isnt. Its just out of a service/MOT with them which had no advisories and Ive had to have my breaks, speakers and rear sensors done so far already this month. It seems like one thing after another fails with this car! Sorry about the rant, I really loved this car when I drove it off the forecourt but it has literally spent so much time in the garage I am tearing my hair out. I really appreciate the help so far. I suppose Im looking to see if it is cost effective to take it local and ignore my warranty/Arnold clark all together.

Understandable you are annoyed.

Battery and/or battery-connections can be an instigator for many issues.

I would try and find a good local independant Fiat or Alfa Romeo specialist to diagnose your engine warning light. (The 1.6 Mjet is a Fiat engine used extensively in both of these other marques.)

Check out www.alfaowner.com or www.fiatforum.com which both have a larger UK membership and will have plenty of recommendations for indy garages.

Hi!
I can sympathise with you PattiB86. I am also in the UK and currently have an amber solid engine light warning with the start/stop unavailable message on the dash. Car has been serviced and looked at by a friend of a friend auto spark who said multiple error codes came up. I鈥檝e been told to take it to the jeep dealer. Funny thing is, every now and again the light goes out! The car drives fine in higher gears but feels sluggish in lower gears.
A lot of people are mentioning battery problems-if it was the battery would the battery warning show on the dash? Or is there a chance this wouldn鈥檛 show up? I鈥檓 so reluctant to take it to the dealer as it鈥檚 probably going to cost an absolute fortune!! Any advice is much appreciated!

Nev, thank you so much for your responses!
J85m, I have an appointment to have it seen at the garage that has fixed all the other issues for me on Tuesday so I will let you know how I get on. They just order JEEP parts which generally come same day.
My past experience with the dealership is that they tell you they cant find the problem and the car is fine, charge a fortune to tell you that. Then the car gets worse and you have to take it somewhere else to get it sorted. So my trust in them is minimal at best.
When I phoned to book in with the nearest dealership for the engine light (as per my warranty) they said they couldnt see it because it was a Jeep and that they wouldnt even be able to service it. They carried out my MOT/service a month ago 馃し馃徏鈥嶁檧锔

Have you taken yours to the dealer about the engine light and stop start light? I鈥檓 dreading going because I鈥檓 expecting the exact thing you鈥檙e describing! I鈥檓 now getting the stop/start battery checked tomorrow to see if it鈥檚 maybe the problem! I will let you know! I am probably clutching at straws thinking it鈥檚 the battery but it would make sense as the car isn鈥檛 used as much these days as it used to be- I鈥檓 guessing that would cause problems 馃し鈥嶁檧锔

I was told they couldnt take it, like I said above. Then when I asked about their Jeep dealership further away they said they wouldnt be able to take it until the end of December. Not even for a diagnostic. Plus my previous experience is that the tell you the diagnostic didn鈥檛 tell them anything and charge you 拢170 to come and collect your car.
So I have gone local independent. They are VAT registered so if the issue is covered by warranty they can claim from them, which is at least something.
My mechanic said its commonly battery or O2 sensors. The Jeep battery only has a 4-5year lifetime and my car is 2016. I drive regular long distance on the motorway so plenty to charge it but if the battery is end of life I don't think it matters

Sorry I haven鈥檛 read your previous post properly!! I was asked if I鈥檇 warranty when I booked mine in but I don鈥檛 think I鈥檓 covered! Earliest I could get booked with the dealer is 1st December which isn鈥檛 that bad I suppose! It鈥檚 just bugging me not knowing what鈥檚 wrong with it! Keep us posted and I鈥檒l do the same!

Will do. If it is battery then they come in between 拢100-200 depending on what you go for for Jeep Renegade 1.6. The O2 sensors are relatively inexpensive too. Then cost for labour. So at least that is massively less than the cost of an engine!

If it make you feel any better my warranty hasn鈥檛 been worth the paper its written on.

You can check the battery state ( well, what the Jeep reports the battery status is) on the 鈥淛eep skills鈥.
Mine is a 2016, original battery. I have been charging the battery when it鈥檚 been sitting about during lockdown. That usually raises it to 98% from 75% or so.

edited to add鈥 I know eurocarparts do batteries of correct type, it needs to be a specific stop start one.

I鈥檓 not even surprised at the warranty!! I have a 2017 1.6 petrol and seem to have different display/settings.
I checked my battery reading on the dash earlier and it gives voltage鈥aying 14v so that probably ruins my theory but still getting it all checked. The guy who is looking at it says he will check the start/stop battery- this must be different 馃し鈥嶁檧锔
The price for the battery sounds manageable PattiB86- thanks for that!

So! Mine is my O2 sensor. Part been ordered today and will be fitted tomorrow. They are going to replace sensor one (thats throwing up the codes) then see if sensor two throws any codes but the mechanic is hopeful its just one that need replaced. Of course when they started the car today the engine light was off, but was on this morning 馃槀
Will let you know cost tomorrow!

Hopefully it's easier to replace than the upstream O2 sensor on the 2.4l.... because that was a nightmare to get at! Had to pull the heatshield, a mounting bracket, and still only just barely had access. Even with the correct tools it was a pain!

So pleased you鈥檝e hopefully got to the bottom of it!!!! Im sure you鈥檙e glad!
I鈥檓 still no further on! Battery is apparently like new so that鈥檚 not an issue!
Took it to an independent mechanic yesterday who is clued in on jeep and he said he would do his research and get back to me. He plugged his computer into the car. I haven鈥檛 heard anything yet! Looks like I鈥檒l be off to dealers 馃槱馃槱

I know you said you had multiple codes when your friend checked, I had three codes and they were all for O2 sensor one. Im not sure if that is helpful at all. My garage is taking the car to a different independent tomorrow morning to get it sorted so Im not sure if they had to run the codes or they have the parts or if like JustinC said they know it is a tricky job to replace them.

That all sounds very promising, you鈥檙e getting somewhere!
My main 2 codes were about the engine- engine position and camshaft position or timing. Think it was p0008 and p0011. If the independent mechanic doesn鈥檛 get back to me then I鈥檒l be waiting to next Wednesday to drop it to the dealer!
