Just put a fuel filter in the line somewhere.

Still wouldn't solve the issue. The main filter is built into the pump, all the contaminants are going to collect there before every going down the line to a secondary filter. All you're doing is putting in redundancy.

I have not had mine out yet but on most sending units I have seen you can snatch the filter off of the unit and put another one on or just run it with it off.
