Grinding/vibration/rumble Noise at ~30mph

Band new Trailhawk Renegade with ~ 550 miles. When driving at a steady throttle input at about 30 mph a grinding noise starts and then it appears to go away as you speed up, you can actually feel it, like very faint rumble strips. The noise remains when I put the transmission in neutral and let the car coast. Sometimes it will stick around and give a grind down sound as you stop.

This was posted in another section and I'm thinking it's the same issue;

http://www.jeeprenegadeforum.com/fo...enegade-already-having-issues.html#post268426

The noise does seems to go away when switched into 4WD Lock. I haven't tried, but I will try next time I'm out slipping the car into manual from automatic and see what that does.

Any ideas? I'm thinking it is the transfer case.. Normal or should we take it into the shop?

Thanks!!!

So "JeepCares"

The extent of what I know technically about this particular concern, at least at this point, is pretty much exactly what that star case mentions: If the vehicle is put into 4WD lock the growl goes away then it is a function of the disconnecting AWD drive system when it disconnects into 4x2 mode.

Sorry that I don't have more on this right now! If I hear of any further updates about it, I'll definitely share.
We left ours with our local dealer for an extra day to give them more time to experience the problem so they might have some idea how to repair it, but they continue to say they can't duplicate the problem. They're not driving it much, is all I can say.

I assume "JeepCares" means you represent Jeep, and your responses seem to indicate this is a known issue. So is a TSB in the works? What is the expected timeline for a fix?

Correct, I do represent Jeep. Either a TSB, or an updated STAR case is in the works regarding this. I do not know of a timeline for the software update that is mentioned above at this point, but I will look into that to see if there has been a timeline established yet.

I appreciate your diligence in this. I noticed this issue for the first time the day I brought my TH home from the dealer. While I've taken a "wait and see" approach with this, the shade-tree mechanic in me can't help but feel a sense of foreboding that something is wrong and unless addressed I'm headed for some issue down the road. After five years of driving my CJ5 every day and having nobody to complain to but other forum members about bone-headed things Jeep engineers did 40 years ago, it's incredibly nice to have a direct conduit to Jeep that listens and responds to issues. Keep doing what you're doing. We appreciate it.

Thanks, Joe! I appreciate the support and encouragement!

I spoke to some of our engineering folks today and was advised that they are expecting to roll this repair out to dealerships in the near future. They asked that I check in with them periodically for a status update on when the proper fix will be fully rolled out, so I will do so and keep you guys posted through this thread.

We just picked up our Latitude and I noticed it right away. I will have to try shutting off the esc, manual mode or 4wd lock to see if it goes away. I thought it might be the tires until I read this thread. One of the reasons I thought it was tires is the noise went away over newly paved short sections of highway followed by older pavement in between. I will give the suggestions a try and report back.
If I turn off the esc it never makes the noise.
I think my noise are the tires. I Tried shutting off esc, manual, 4wd lock and the noise stayed the same. I did find some new paving and the noise pretty much disappeared but not completely. My dealer is going to check alignment next week, my steering wheel is not centered, not sure if misalignment would create tire noise.

Depending on the wear, it can make noise. The GY Sras aren't the quietest tires around by any means, but not enough people are complaining about that so far. If you can run your hand across the tires tread and you feel some uneven wear, certain roadways will make more noise than usual.

I just tried this last night and turning off the ESC from the start keeps the noise from ever showing up on mine as well.
I finally got a trip where I got the noise, and could experiment with it.

Traction control goes of, about a two second count and noise goes away.
Hmm. 4 cylinder engines have a beat tone/frequency to them. This can cause vibration as the sound impulse is really powered by the combusting fuel, so the energy input is pretty significant. It seems the renegade/2.4/9speed combo puts that beat just above the target efficient RPMs. I have noticed this slightly boomy slightly grumbling sound since day 1. Putting it in a forced 4wd mode elminates it because it loads up the engine quicker, which means that where the beat tone happens is moved. Since it seems to go away, I'm assuming it is moved to something between idle and ~1500rpm which is a span the revs move through pretty quickly.

I suspect 1.4T engines and the over seas offerings don't have this issue because they don't get this drivetrain combination.

The AWDF system with it clutches is also kind of noisy. Similar to late 90s audis with torsen diffs.
very true 4 cylinder engines are best described as "perky and rumblie" ive never really driven a smooth one unlike a v8 or v6
Noticed this noise this morning too - it is more of a rumble type sound/feeling (not really a grinding sound in my case). It only occurs around 30 to 35 mph and as others have stated it stops with Electronic Stability Control turned off. Have we confirmed this is just a software update? I just picked my Renegade Limited up on Saturday and love it other than this (what I believe to be minor) quirk. I know the thread is specific to the TH but it seems other models are also impacted and wanted to share my experience.
Can someone post a video of this rumble sound? And note the rpm, speed, and gear it's in when it does it. I have not noticed any unusual sounds with my Trailhawk.

I've been trying to pin it down. So far one of the reproducible situations is 30mph, about 1500rpm, 6th gear either going uphill without hard acceleration or downhill coasting. About 20 degree incline as a guesstimate.

You should have it checked out. Mine does the same thing and they are replacing the trans.

Yeah except if it were the transmission you'd think it wouldn't stop when you disable esc.
I have the same issue. Took mine into the dealership and they said there were no errors in the system logs and they couldn't reproduce it. I just came back from a 2,000+ mile trip to the U.P. and would hear the noise every so often. I had the vehicle on dirt roads and highways, up to 80 MPH at times. Everything still seemed to work fine. Before I left for vacation, I sent an email to the Jeep customer service department and they called me back while I was still in the U.P. The woman I talked to told me the noise has something to do with the learning process the transmission goes through trying to figure out how you drive and there isn't anything wrong with the car. I did notice the mention of a learning process the transmission goes through and I've notice the noise doesn't appear as often as it use to (Wishful thinking?). I've never noticed any real problems while driving the car. Guess time will tell.
Now if they'd just fix the noise the MySky makes and improve my low beam headlights.

Any time you hear "learning process" you can be pretty certain they are lying to you. Every single time I have heard that, then gotten my hands on the technical parameters, there has been a grand canyon sized gap between what the customer facing person claims the learning period is vs what the technical specs claim.

Also, I forgot to add that it is most definitely coming from the rear of the vehicle near the rear diff. It isn't odd that there's noise given that's where multiple clutch like objects engage and disengage to manage AWD and left-right torque distribution to the rear wheels. What is odd is that it's generating chatter on dry, straight, well maintained roads.

Same issue here

Hi I am having the same issue, I have had it at my dealer, they re-produced the issue and diagnosed it as a BCM issue. They replaced it and said it was good to go, however after less than 15 miles, while decelerating at ~30 mph it did it again. My description is as follows: it seems similar to and ABS system engaging(noise wise) however it seems to be coming from underneath the rear set, about where the rear differential would be(I don't know that it has one). for me turning off the electronic traction control makes the noise go away after a couple seconds. I have not tried the 4WD lock at this point. if I am driving in city traffic I just turn it off at this point.
I had whine in my Renegade. Panicked at first, then I realised it was the missus.
