Grinding/vibration/rumble Noise at ~30mph

Band new Trailhawk Renegade with ~ 550 miles. When driving at a steady throttle input at about 30 mph a grinding noise starts and then it appears to go away as you speed up, you can actually feel it, like very faint rumble strips. The noise remains when I put the transmission in neutral and let the car coast. Sometimes it will stick around and give a grind down sound as you stop.

This was posted in another section and I'm thinking it's the same issue;

http://www.jeeprenegadeforum.com/fo...enegade-already-having-issues.html#post268426

The noise does seems to go away when switched into 4WD Lock. I haven't tried, but I will try next time I'm out slipping the car into manual from automatic and see what that does.

Any ideas? I'm thinking it is the transfer case.. Normal or should we take it into the shop?

Thanks!!!

I had whine in my Renegade. Panicked at first, then I realised it was the missus.
That's hilarious! LOL

My humour is what gets me through the day. I have arthritis in my, deep breath, knees, hips, spine (worst affected), shoulders, neck and hands. Hands usually worse in cold and wet weather. Also have spondylitis and prolapsed discs in my lower spine. I use two elbow crutches to move a short distance. If I stand up or move around my right leg goes numb. This is due to the prolapsed discs pushing down on the nerves in my spine. I'm great sat down which is just as well so I can drive. I have a wheelchair that can be pushed by someone or self propelled by me on level ground for a few feet. I also have an electric scooter that folds up and can be stowed in the boot (trunk) of the Jeep. Need to get it fixed.

I don't want people feeling sorry for me or owt like that, so I just get on with life. There are people who are worse than me, so I gotta be thankful I ain't any worse. I am slowly worsening over time, but I was told that I will.

Life goes on and onwards and upwards. There's life in the old dog yet. Not so much old, I'm fifty next year, but you know what I mean.

Now you know why I have my humour:)

@JeepCares any updates on this issue? Has FCA confirmed its a software issue and not something that will require maintenance beyond a simple update? Ironically this made it to Edmunds.com this week in their long term review of the Renegade and it appears they are referencing our thread.

Good, hopefully publicity will get it fixed/acknowledged faster. I have had my north for a week and this noise is the only thing thats irritating me. Well that and having to work all day and not be able to drive it.

Why is it ironic? The edmunds tester posted asking about it here on the forum.

Apologies, I missed their post on the forum and hadn't seen mention yet of the article, I should've read through the thread more thoroughly. It'd just be nice to hear an update from Jeep regarding this issue - now that it's on Edmunds I'm hoping for the best.

I used Ironic in the context that it may get more attention now.

Same here

Got a chance to try this during the past weekend and YES turning off the TCS did eliminate the sound.
The post made by Tony above is in reference to my Jeep. After 3 dealership trips, they are still at a loss as to what is causing the rumbling noise when I let off the gas or coast between 20-40mph.

It sounds like someone downshifted one too many and it almost resembles that rumbling sound. I've tried forcing the 4wd lock on when it makes the noise, I've pushed it into the "manual" mode as well as turning the traction control button off. All of these make the noise stop immediately but it just comes back the next day.

If anyone has any updates that would be fantastic. Chrysler/Jeep is now filing this away as normal.
Ask your dealer to give you a letter saying it is normal. If they wont do it ask why not.

Thank you, I will ask for the letter stating this. If they can prove this is not causing any damage, I'm willing to ignore it. I leased the vehicle so hopefully time is on my side.
If you are complaining about a noise, you might want to post an example.

The driveline in the renegade is not super quiet. There's a difference between not liking something and it being broken.

Without an example, we can't tell if you are complaining about something actually wrong, or just about the way the car is.

If the car isn't actually broken, good luck with the lemon law attempt. There are usually requirements to be met regarding the nature of an issue. Simply not liking the way the vehicle sounds probably doesn't make the cut.
The rumbling noise is heard and felt throughout the Jeep. It happens when you let off the gas or when coasting at the 20-40mph range. It sounds like a manual transmission that downshifted one gear too many. I have the automatic transmission but it allows me to put it into the "manual" mode and when I do that, it stops for a little while.

Jeep called me today and said that after 3 times taking it in, they have no idea what is causing it, and nothing looks damaged. They flashed the computer on the 2nd visit and it helped for about 4 days.

Not sure how to go forward with the issue at the moment.

Tony, the OP, quoted nesav132's post from a blog on caranddriver.com when he started this thread.

A quote within a quote from another forum. It's like message board Inception.

I have an email from my service manager stating this is normal....so at least I have it in writing!

There's another thread that I believe deals with the same issue. As a test, next time you hear it turn off the stability control via the ESC button. See if it goes away.

Lots of people have the noise, and turning off ESC and putting it in 4wd makes it go away. Not sure if yours is the same noise, but if it is it is pretty universal, and may just be the normal sounds of the vehicle. Or it may be a common problem that need to be resolved. I find it odd that ESC is making noises, which implies doing something, on dry, straight, paved road.

However, drive a 90s audi with all the torsen diffs, and it's a noisy bugger too, so....
