A friend has a 2016 Renegade Trailhawk 170K on the odometer mostly long distance highway driving <> New Mexico and Los Angeles

It started shifting hard in the lower gears only when cold roughly a year ago. When it warms up it shifts fine

He has had it to the dealer and the transmission fluid was changed. Don't know if the pan was removed and the strainer/filter was changed, or if the entire system was flushed

There are no warning lights or codes displayed, he doesn't know if a scan of the transmission control computer was done

What could be the problem?

How many shifts before it warms up and shifts fine?
Good question I'll ask

Mine is a 2015, and has always had a hard shift on take off in cold weather unless I back up first or idle it for about a minute. It's due to the computer pulling throttle input combined with when the trans tries to shift. The net result is a very poor rev match and a hard shift. So possibly a dying temp sensor or thermostat?
I checked the ECT and the IAT as well as the RPM and all seemed to be within normal limits though the ECT was a bit higher (+2°f) than the IAT . I was hoping my scan tool would allow me to see the TFT but alas no. I was thinking if the TFT was not working correctly it could cause problems
