Also curious. I am thinking about ditching the plastic cover and painting the valve cover red like the 1.4L engine in the Geneva auto shows Fiat Spider 124 Abarth

Got you. So pry away caps and remove cover nuts. Might do this when I get home.

I had thought of ditching the engine cover, too. I did that on my previous car, a 2005 Sentra SE-R Spec V. In that case it was nothing but useless aesthetic cladding.

On my Renegade, however, when I removed the cover, I found a significant amount of heat shielding for the turbo and what seems to be sound-deadening material is attached to the underside of the cover. So in this case the cover seems to serve a bit more purpose, so I'll be keeping it in place.
