Hidden button on keyfob (not keyless enter and go)

76167 Views 101 Replies 64 Participants Last post by  puddlesplasher
So like I posted in another post about the discovery of the hidden bottom to pop the trunks ! I ended up taking a part the key fob to see what's preventing the blank botton from actully being pushed like the other bottons ! What I found was 4 little tabs on the back of the blank botton once removed and reassembled everything works perfect ! Like the other bottons on the key fob!

Interesting. I still wonder about the motivation..
On the UK key fob the boot (trunk) is highlighted like the lock and unlock buttons. Also where the button on yours has panic hold, on mine it is for the headlights to be switched on.
Interesting can you post a picture ?

mass84, could you please explain how you got the key fob apart safely? Thanks.

I actually used that button the other day to load something in the back, and learned this -- when you unlock the tailgate with it, and then shut the tailgate again before opening up any other doors, it re-locks automatically.

We'll likely never know... Unless some problem crops up from using it! It is strange. It may be a safety issue. I wonder if you can open it while the Jeep is in motion... or some other weird situation where it can be opened when it shouldn't... and they didn't discover the problem until 15,000 keyfobs were manufactured. :) I have keyless go... My fob won't open the hatch...
Maybe it's an option they wanted us to pay ...

Yeah, my #1 theory is that they originally intended to offer a power liftgate, and that button would have been for that, for some reason it was axed, but the remote interface to the hatch release mechanism was left on.

When you say that it 'pops the trunk,' that just means it unlocks it, right? The gate doesn't actually go up.
By pop I mean it actully
Pops it open you'll still need to Manuelly lift it up but you don't have to press the button under the lip of
The trunk !

Gotcha! Not really sure why I'm asking anyway .. other than curiosity. The blanks on my fob don't do anything LOL.

Even just unlatching sure could be handy with two arms full of grocery bags

It is not self-explanatory, lol. You just pull the fob apart or what? They are no screws on the outside. I can't tell what's supposed to come off and I'm afraid I'm going to mess up the key part if I keep pulling on it.
Remove these and split the 2 halves inside is a circuit board and
Behind that you'll see the
Buttons you'll
Be able to
Modify them then!

There's a tiny indention where you can put a small screwdriver to pry apart the back half:

Take 3 screws out:

Carefully unwind cover attached to spring, be mindful of spring and piece that goes into the key:

Pop the circuit board out:

Use a small flathead screwdriver to pop the buttons out:

Notice the little tabs on the corners of the "non-button" compared to the flat corners of the actual buttons:

Remove the tabs carefully with a knife:

Put everything back together in reverse. Make sure to locate the spring's legs in the corresponding areas on the key and the fob plastic, and rotate it at least once around (to preload spring) before snapping back together.

I opened mine and its totally different circuit board and the push buttons are integrated at the circuit board, so no luck :(

Yeah, the button trick doesn't work on the keyless.

Nice write up, @XCLR8TN!

reyTHny, your fob already has the push twice to open tailgate button.
Does a single push open it with the keyed fob?
That might be why it is disabled.
