Tools need to remove the Skid Plate from a Trailhawk:
10 mm socket, 13 mm socket and a t-30 torx bit (Bumper cover to Skid bolts)

Tip for skidplate: remove all bolts but one of the most rearward ones, there are two of them. The rear ones, the holes are slotted in the skidplate. Loosen that one bolt just about all the way. Slide the skid forward from under that bolt head, then back from out from above the bumper cover. To install, slide the skid above the bumper cover, then the slot back to that one rear bolt. It will stay in place to get all the other bolts started.

Thank You Rammer
Easy enough for one person, no need for help (extra hands, blocks, floor jack, ect.).

Agreed. I changed oil on my Trailhawk last night and I had to use my legs to steady while I put the bolts in. I'm 5'6" 140, so it was ok for me - plenty of wiggle room. Hand tighten a 13mm and a 10mm on the left side. Slide the plate in and hand tighten a 13mm and a 10mm on the right side. Everything else falls into place. I used Valvoline and Fram Ultra XG10060.

Just wanted to mention if you own a Trailhawk you will not need to use ramps (lift the vehicle) to do the oil change. I'm 5'8", 160 lbs and I had absolutely no problem getting under it when I did my fist oil change. Used Mobil 1 Extended performance oil and OEM filter. Don't forget to buy a 6 pack of your favorite beer! (or favorite beverage). Drinks come in handy while you wait for the oil to drain ;)

BTW, I removed the front skid plate until I need to use it again. This is because it's a pain in the ass to put it back on by yourself (it's kind of heavy), it weights about 50 lbs, so I decided to leave it off to save get better gas mileage. It might not make a huge difference, but it never hurts to drive with 50 lbs less. I will put it back on once winter is back!

Great write up!
How many beers does it take for the oil to drain completely? When I go under I wish to be prepared.

i changed mine last week as well at 5000 miles and its was pretty simple, i have found that the GEMA engines all laid out the same and a breeze to change the oil on.i was going to take it to the dealer but they wanted 80 bucks and possibly more so i spent under 50 bucks and did it in 30 mins.

i installed a K&N filter this afternoon and i am curiously if it will help or hurt it. the K&N is about a quarter of the size of the stock filter which had an actual piece of foam type sos pad. I have 5400 miles right now just to give you mileage dirtyness comparison. i also showed the K&N box next to the old air, the K&N moved around pretty good in the box so its not an exact size comparison.

Good to know... was going to attempt at changing myself. Guess I'll have to ask the husband for assistance :D

Noticed that my daughter’s 2017 FWD doesn’t have an under belly splash shield below the engine compartment. Vehicle was built in May 2017 in Italy. Anyone else with a ‘17 with or without this cover?

Thanks. Whenever I am under the car I always look for any rust spots and I try to kill it asap with either black rustoleum paint or FluidFilm rust protection. Rust can eat away subframes in a short time causing a dangerous condition. Our mission my friends is to keep Tony in retirement or dead. Kill that rust ! That's one of Tony's food. You know Tony right?

My wife's 2017 Latitude (US) has the plastic thing under the engine.
It does NOT need to be removed to do an oil/filter change.
My 2018 Trailhawk (US) has a metal skid plate.
Haven't done an oil change on that one yet.

Prerequisites

Oil filter wrench (or you can just use your hand, plenty of room)
12mm socket, or equivalent SAE
5.5 quarts of 0w-20 oil. I used M1 Advanced
Oil filter. I used Purolater L122222
Drain pan
Some kinda funnel. Don't make a mess.
Shop towels

Maybe some ramps? Can probably be done without ramps if you have long arms
Gloves

Steps

  1. Get your gloves
  2. Warm up engine, but not crazy. It's hot oil , bro.
  3. Wait for your neighboors to make snide comment about Chrysler or American cars...
  4. Get the Renegade in the air. Be safe, please.
  5. Open hood and remove the oil cap. Don't remove it all the way, just crack it open. Don't want anything falling in.
  6. Loosen oil filter slightly to make sure it will even come undone.
  7. Position drain pan [incorrectly] and loosen the drain plug.
  8. Watch it drain.
  9. I usually pour a little bit of fresh oil at this point to help flush out the old stuff. Not too much though.
  10. Tighten drain bolt back up. Not too tight! Doesn't require much force, just snug and then a little more.
  11. Remove oil filter. It will be full of oil. Be sure to have drain pan under it.
  12. Let it drain a little bit from oil filter housing
  13. Use a little oil on the gasket of your new filter, then spin it on. Again, don't over tighten. I always install oil filters by hand.
  14. Pour in 5.5 qt of fresh oil
  15. Put oil cap back on
  16. Start engine
  17. Make sure no leaks...
Enjoy!
Remove the dipstick ( step 5 A) and wipe it clean or the old oil clinging to it may contaminate the clean oil. Also, be sure to check the oil level one more time before you drive the car. Be sure to reinstall the engine undercover or Trailhawk skid plate. Put some anti-seizing compound on the attachment bolts so they will be easy to remove next time.
