Just curious, I notice mine when idling kinda has a bit of a glug glug glug sound to it, I've never owned a new vehicle and haven't driven a 4 cylinder in a while so I'm not really sure what it's "supposed" to sound like. Might be totally normal.

Here's a crappy video but you can catch some of the engine sound in it. I moved the camera around to get different angles on it, might have to listen a few times. Thoughts?

I think it's something we're all going to have to get used to. :/ I came from a smooth as butter Turbo 5 cylinder Volvo that was only loud when I wanted it to be >:D

I can't say that I mind the sound though, it's just unique. Kinda TDI sounding at times. LOL

The 2.4 litre sounds, idles, accelerates, a great deal like the 1.4 from the 500. I wouldn't assume it will ever idle nice or be noted for its smooth performance. I've noticed some exhaust vibration and maybe a heat shield. certainly know it's running at idle.

Cool thanks everyone, glad to have some more reference since they're so rare at this point I can't just go listen to another one. I also can't hear it from inside the car, and I didn't notice till I hopped out with it running. I don't mind the sound either just wanted to make sure it was normal.

I noticed that from the outside the "glug glug" sound is fairly clear but it doesn't sound like grinding metal or gives way to the idea that the engine isn't running smoothly. From the inside cabin the renegade sounds as quiet as an electric car so I'm sure it's normal. (I bought the Renegade two weeks ago put 1000 miles on it already.)

sounds like a normal 4 cyl to me... if you want loud, I have a 512 CI mopar motor in my 67 charger..... that is loud, and has a distinctive lope.

I've got a pair of 1.4 MultiAir engines in my driveway, my Renegade and my wife's 500. They both sound exactly the same at idle when standing outside the car. Distinctly diesel-like. It sounds like top-end (valvetrain) noise to my ear, so I assume it's a characteristic of the MultiAir setup. The only time I can hear it from inside the car is if I'm right next to a wall with the window open, like in a drive-thru.

The 2.4 L engine is not the most quiet four cylinder made; now throw in the multiair valve train and you have a rather loud engine. I agree, you cannot hear it from inside the cabin. The multiair valve train is loud, my FIAT Abarth was loud with the same valve train. It is just the sound you are going to get from this combination. Doesnt detract from the vehicle and you obviously know when it is running :)

Hi Teddyfirehouse,
Mine sounds just like that. I had an 08 madzda 3 with a 2.3 liter and it was NO where near as loud. I wasn't sure how normal the sound was so I took it in and talked to my dealership. I've actually asked 2 dealerships because I'm nuts. They both said it was normal. It is taking some getting used to. I can hear it a bit when I'm inside and my car vibrates a little when its in idle. Again, they said it was normal. Hope it helps!
