I test drove a latitude in NJ

Test drove a latitude today and here is what I got:

funky looking but a lot different than it looks in pictures.. I was expecting a "girlier" car, no offense meant in that statement.

I was looking at the parked renegade and an old lady walked up next to me, probably in her 60-70's and said "FINALLY ITS OUT". This got me worried. but she started looking at it and walked back to her veloster and left the lot.. so I asked the sales man for a test drive..

I found my self grinning instantly. this thing was fun right out of the lot. Lots of room inside for a small car. the front seats were comfortable but the head rests were hard as $hit but who uses those **** things anyways. The telescoping steering wheel was cool and the parking brake button was a little odd. the info system, which replaces the radio is small as heck! the back up camera in the **** thing is really small, probably much safer to just turn around because there are very little blind spots in this car.

the side view mirrors are big and I could see two full lanes on both sides of the car. I drove a 2.4l and it had good acceleration and was able to go from the ramp to left lane speed (70mph and weaving around people) with no problem. the electronic assisted power steering is so light when going slow and perfect when at higher speeds.

there are some weird corky designs on the inside that i didn't like.. as in the random orange accents around the cup holders. and the sun visor sits in a very weirdly cut out cove.

the ride is nice and really quiet although comparing it to the subaru XV it was a little firm, but I was expected that from a jeep. plus the tires seemed a little over inflated after the ride and inspected.

Under the hood there is plenty of room to do routine maintenance and enough ground clearance to perform an oil change without jacking up the car. The gas cap.. is well non existent which was weird, salesmen said its a carless system nowadays.

there was no trailer hitch option on the one I drove but the cargo room seemed adequate and with the rear seats folded down theres enough room for a good amount of stuff maybe even a futon..

overall I liked it.. it seemed very well put together for a jeep fiat baby. under the car seemed very simple with no crazy design covers or features..

the salesmen said the 2.4l is not a fiat engine.. Anyone provide validity on that??

I am probably going to purchase one this week... I am coming from a dodge ram 5.7 hemi so its a down size but I am willing to take it.

PS the gas mileage on the 4x4 latitude was reading 24.7 no where near the "starting with a 3" jeep reps said a while back.

anyways it was worth the wait.. sorry for the informal writing, lack of pictures and overall messy review but I will post pictures when I go to see MY DEALER!

I think he's right on the 2.4l. I was at the dealership waiting for the sales guy to try talking numbers and I saw a brochure pointjng out the different engines and saw theres some vans offered by dodge that feature that 2.4l. I think these are dodge/ram or Chrysler engines.

that makes me happy because my experience with dodge/chrysler engines have been great have over 250,000 miles on both of them
Engines are fiat engineering, built in the us.
so its engineered in italy, built in the US and then shipped to italy to be put in the cars? No wonder we have been waiting forever.

BTW Raz-o: are you the same Razzo that does honda mini trail restorations?

I just wanted to touch on a couple of points.

1.) The orange accents will be replaceable with body color trim pieces from MOPAR. 6 to 12 months from now most likely.

2.) The starting with a 3 was for Highway MPGs plus, you are driving an unbroken in car. My experience on the Dart forum, the 2.4 starts getting better mileage at the 5k mark and get about 2 to 3 more MPG. Take that for what you will.

Correct me if im wrong but, Im pretty sure the 2.4 tigershark is based on the World Engine block that was designed with Chrysler,Hyundai and Mistubishi, But updated with a Fiat Multiar 2 head and some other goodies.

I believe the 2.4 has forged Crank, rods and piston oil scquirters, Seems like the motor was designed with turbocharging in mind.

This means that the intake Valves are not controlled via an actual camshaft. but
electric solenoids triggered by the ecu and actuated via oil pressure.

The 2.4 tigershark uses a timing chain vs a rubber belt to run the exhaust valves, The 1.4 Multiair turbo uses a rubber belt.

The 2.4 is built in Dundee Michigan and shipped back out to Italy to be installed on the line.

The ZF 9 speed is also built in the US. (Indiana possibly?)

Wrong. The 2.4 is a US motor with some FCA Italy tech added (MultiAir).

Matching Anvil painted trim on a trailhawk is going to rock even if i have to do them myself!

Offtopic: I had a friend that brought a pickup-truck load of CT-70's home several years back and restored them. He made a small fortune! They went for ~$2K+ each. His name was not Razzo either, however.
Was there much room in the back seats for say two 6ft tall individuals? Decent leg room with front seats on a slight recline?

Yes, people on this forum that stand 6FT+ have said they could comfort sitting behind the driver's seat setup for them. Around town trips would be fine, road trips not so much.

I am only 5'10 so my view is biased and my dad is 5'7. We both fit back there with plenty of room. The sales man was a big box over 6'3 and he sat shotgun and actually moved the seat forward. When he got in the back there was ample leg room but it wouldn't fit three big guys back there that's for sure.. made more for the tiny in stature. Even at 5/10 and 5/7 it would be a "doable" ride for us in the back. But the drivers seat and front passenger have a lot more room than expected.

I hope so. This may sound like a little thing, but to me it's a big deal. I love having an interior with some colorful accents but I don't know if the orange/brown color scheme does it for me. I think it's too busy also having grey and some silver accents too. Way too many colors in one interior.

I'd much rather have a black interior, but it does need some color. I'd love to get a blue exterior Renegade Sport or Latitude and then add the blue accents to the black interior. I think that would look great.
the ability to wrap parts of your car with vinyl wrap might push me to wrap parts of the interior for my own color scheme, but no carbon fiber vinyl
