Installing automatic headlights

3806 Views 6 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  oskar.p
I have a 2018 renegade sport 4wd and since its base model it did not come with automatic headlights. Its my least favorite part of the car as i almost always forget to turn them on and off. I was wondering if there was any way to install auto lights. I know id need a new switch and maybe a sensor? Idk what parts id need or if it's even possible.

Anything is possible if you have a fat enough wallet. But I'd bet it's not as simple as a switch and a sensor. Programming not only the switch but updating your main computer and/or your head unit (radio) to reflect the added items so you can control them. The needed wiring harness for the auto-switch may be present, may not be. You may be looking at quite a price tag to have the auto-lights feature, I don't know.

In my opinion it's far cheaper and easier to manually turn on/off the lights, as we've been doing for decades. That being said, I do have auto headlights and I think they are awesome.
[hijack] I wish automatic headlights and continuously illuminated instrument clusters would go away. Too many times I see (or should I say 'barely see') drivers seeming to rely solely on the sensor(s) to turn on their lights, or have forgotten to turn them on (manually or in auto) because their instruments are illuminated and they think they are on. Several states in my area require full headlight (and taillight) use when using the wipers. Most vehicles do not seem to have an interlock to turn on the headlights with the wipers, and ignorant drivers don't bother.

I drive one of those ubiquitous, creepy white vans for work. Let me warn you that your vehicles are nearly invisible in my mirrors when the roads are wet due to the road spray - unless your headlights are on.

FYI: DRLs are not "headlights" and you are invisible from the rear. I now return you to your regular scheduled thread. [/hijack]

I agree especially on the instrument cluster, why does that even exist, what purpose does it serve?

I notice around major airports, at night, a high percentage of vehicles exiting the airport with only the daytime running lights on (no tail lights). I'm guessing most of them are driven by people in (unfamiliar) rental cars, they see the dash lights and daytime running lights and mistakenly believe their lights are on.

I tried to do this with my son's Mazda (I know different car). There was a different wiring harness for the auto headlights so it wouldn't work. It will depend if Jeep/Fiat used one harness available for everything.

... to the forum.

You will need:
the Light Switch to have to option to use the Automatic Headlights,
the sensor that fit in the "Black Box" behind the interior review mirror so that the Body Control Module (BCM) will know when to turn on the Automatic Headlights,
software like AlfaOBD (as an example) to enable the Automatic Headlight function in the BCM,
OBDLink MX+ OBD2 (as an example) so that your phone (Android) using the AlfaOBD software can talk to the Renegade,
Security Gateway Module Bypass because 2018 and newer FCA vehicles have a Security Gateway Module to keep hacker from hijacking your Renegade.

Yes, it can be done.
Hi Folks. I tag on to this thread since i´m searching for the same solution but for a 2015 renegade limited 2.0 diesel 4wd (Swedish model) Did anyone found out if there´s existing wiring for the auto-switch and sensor?
