Does anyone know if there is a way to turn off the interior cargo area lights while the liftgate is open? This would be useful for tailgating purposes without having to worry about killing the battery.

I found this post when searching for the answer to this question while camping at the beach last weekend. I set up my sleeping bag in the back with the back seats down and the cargo door open, but noticed the small lights in the cargo area were the only lights that never shut off. After trying everything I could think with the knobs and dials and instrument panel, I had another beer and figured out how to do this.

Open the cargo door. Look at the bottom of the door and find the latch in the center. Push on the "catch" in the middle - this is the part that moves when you push it - and push it as far as you can until it clicks in place and the lights turn off. Basically, you're just tricking the door into thinking that it has closed. You have to push it pretty far and it's kind of a tight space, so you might need to use a skinny tool if you have fat fingers :)

When you're ready to close the door, just press the hatch-open-button at the bottom of the cargo door to release the catch so it is ready to latch to the bottom of the cargo area for closing.

Nice. Sometimes the most obvious answer is the best one.

I tailgated for several hours with my Latitude for fireworks on the 4th of July, left the hatch open. I didn't worry too much about the cargo lights being on since I have LED bulbs in them, so the power draw should be minimal. But if one was trying to sleep back there, I can see how it would be a problem.

I went fishing last night and left the rear hatch open. At some point the lights went off, not sure how long it took though. I fished for about an hour and a half. Next time I leave the hatch open I will keep an eye on the lights.
