...that I introduce myself. Hi, everyone. My name's Dave and I'm a potential Renegade owner.

We've been shopping for a compact SUV for some time now. Exciting new entrants to the segment like the Mercedes-Benz GLA and the Audi Q3 had us excited, and the BMW X1 was an existing contender. My better half was convinced that the GLA would do it for us...until we visited a dealer. Forget it. That vehicle is so small. It might as well be a small hatchback that's been raised a few inches (barely taller than most cars). By no means are either of us tall (5'8" and 5'6") but we both felt cramped in the GLA, and the rear seat entry felt awkward at best. As the dealer put it, "this is a vehicle designed to look good." Clearly the visual aesthetic trumps the practical with this vehicle.

The Q3 looks good and has the typical Audi quality interior, but I'm less than enthused about the powertrain. It's a carryover from prior generation Audis and not one that I've ever been particularly excited about. The Aisin-sourced 6-speed slushbox is less than stellar in my opinion, and the 2.0T engine is not the latest version with the accompanying power upgrades. This makes sense since the Q3 has been on sale in Europe for several years now and Audi is just bringing it to the U.S.; i.e., it's not a new vehicle like the GLA, it's just new to the U.S.

Then there's the BMW X1. As former BMW owners, we already appreciated the BMW-ness of it, and it feels every bit a BMW. But is it just me, or does it look like a small station wagon (and not in a good VW Golf kind of way) and not a small SUV? Neither of us could get past that, even though it drives the best out of the three vehicles mentioned thus far.

This leaves us with only two options that we're considering: the MINI Countryman S All4 and the Renegade. We've driven the Countryman before and loved it, particularly so the ability to get AWD and a 6-speed manual. Before we settle on the Countryman as our vehicle of choice, we're really hoping the Renegade impresses us. Neither of us is a fan of the it's-really-a-5-speed-with-4-overdrive-gears ZF transmission based on reviews we've seen, but we've admittedly never driven it. We're also both thinking that we'll like the 1.4T engine characteristics better than the 2.4L...but we also want lots of toys/options. Heck, we were prepared to spend $47k on the loaded GLA after all! Point of all this being, we're really hoping that a fully loaded Latitude 1.4T AWD 6-speed will fit the bill because we love the decidedly truck-like appearance of the Renegade over the Countryman. C'mon Jeep, get these things to dealers so we can find out!!!

Welcome, you will find the Renegade way more roomy than the Countryman, I sat in both at the LA Auto Show. Reviews out last week had a number of journalist equally impressed by both engine/trans combinations. Try test driving them both before you decide. I read the manual is from the Fiat 500 and has a long shift through.

We're hoping the Renegade is at the Philadelphia auto show next weekend when we attend to get a feel for the Renegade in person. We're OK with the interior room of the Countryman (it's better and more usable than the GLA), and it uses it's upright stance (similar to the Renegade, though a bit smaller) well for the interior space. If we find the 2.4L/9-speed combo acceptable, we'll probably end up with a fully loaded Limited, but I (we) suspect that we'll enjoy the 1.4T/6-speed combo much more, which will limit us to the Latitude.

Wife has owned two Countryman S models and I'll never have another. The BMW low build quality was immediately obvious. Also, both cars ended up having repairs and parts replaced under warranty in the first year. Both also were subject to recalls. Also, everything is super expensive on them. Lastly, the dealerships for them are few and far between. For the money, there are MUCH better options out there. Will never touch a MINI anything ever again.

Welcome to the forum.
I like BMW's, just dislike what you also dislike, how the x1 takes on more of a wagon look, I do however like the coupe-like look some of their X vehicles have, something I would have preferred BMW did with the X1.

The GLA is on display at the Toronto Opera House and I was also surprised at how small it is. It really is more car sized. Like you said, a raised hatchback.

Not a fan of MINI generally just based on the design.

Hopefully you end up with the Renegade and we can continue to have you around.

All the best!

I agree that the Countryman is much smaller than the Renegade. I sat in both at the Detroit show.

Not surprisingly I suppose, the reviews seem to focus on the Trailhawk. The shifter was stated as having a long-throw in one article, and as "slick" in another article.

I appreciate your feedback. Having owned nothing but German cars since getting my driver's license many years ago, I'm very familiar with their un-Toyota/Honda reliability and the associated costs of ownership. We're OK with that as we feel the vehicles provide far more driving engagement/feel/excitement than anything Toyota/Honda/you-name-it offers in similar segments. Plus, I'm more than capable of doing all but the most difficult maintenances/services on my own, which helps greatly with regular maintenance and repairs. And, when a dealer is needed, there are several within no more than a 45-minute ride from our house.

Yes, if the X1 looked like the X4/X6 we'd probably be driving one right now!! I was hopeful about the next-gen, but spy shots show that it's still decidedly wagon-like rather than small SUV.

Whether we end up with the Renegade or not will very largely depend on our test drives. We both love the way it looks, the available color palette (at least on the Latitude; on the Limited you better love 50 Shades of Gray), and the idea of the 1.4T/6-speed/AWD combo. But if it's not fun to drive, forget it. We're hopeful, as most reviews comment that it's fun to drive on-road. We couldn't care less about it's offroad prowess as the most off roading any vehicle of ours will do is the snow-covered streets of the northeast and the occasional jaunt to visit my brother's family in the VT mountains. What we would love is to find a small hatchback with AWD and a manual, but we'd have to move to Europe for that!
