Mopar and Jeep have shown some pre-configured custom hood decals for the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Customers will be able to create their own custom map decals for these models as well.

The pre-configured decals will let you choose to go country with trail designs or big city with roads. Off road maps will include trails like ****'s Revenge, Poison Spider and the Rubicon Trail. Border colors are also customizable.

Customers can also use an online configurator to view and choose maps of a favorite trail or select a map by zip code. The configurator will give customers a unique part number and design code that can be taken to their local dealership for ordering. Decals will ship to the dealer for installation or the customer can choose to install it on their own.

The starting price for decals is $295.

I wonder if decals will be made available for the Renegade once it actually goes on sale.

Doesn't look good in that picture. I'm not willing to completely discount it from this pic though. It's a cool idea, but I think that it would cheapen the look of the Cherokee. Might work better on the Renegade since it already is a bit cheaper, and small cars I think take better to customization stuff like this.

I personally am not crazy about the design (but I like the idea of them offering it) but it could be done way cheaper if you did some of the work yourself getting the topo map to a vinyl printer.

Very true that you could do it for yourself for cheaper, but companies make money off people being lazy and looking for someone else to do the work for them. Put it in a nice package on a simple website and people will pay you a lot more than what they are buying is worth. That's how businesses make a profit.

as for the why, some people like to personalize their vehicles and this is one of the many things you can do, so why not?

it's not something i would get, but i'm sure there are many out there that do like it

Yes. Options are nice even if I wouldn't go for it myself. I appreciate automakers understanding that many of the casual drivers all the way to the diehard enthusiasts like a little personalization. Look at the Mini Cooper... vast amount of customization options from the factory. I dig it.

I like the idea of making one-of-a-kind hood graphics on a web site and having it installed by some one that knows what they are doing (or supposed to know what they are doing). Whether it be the vehicle manufacturer (dealer) or a third party doing the installation. As far as it coming from the vehicle manufacturer, it makes good business sense. It is something else to draw in more customers. Does Ford, GM, Dodge, RAM, or other vehicle manufacturers offer this from the dealer or the dealer’s web site? I’ve not seen it (yet).
JMG said it rather well:

Personalization, customization, what ever you want to call it. Owners of Jeeps, Motorcycles, Cars, Boats etc. want their vehicle different. Of course they will order different option packages than the next guy. But they still want to make it “theirs”. Do something to it to make look different, personal. A “One-of-a-kind” vehicle. From window tint, to wheels, to pin striping and more. Custom hood graphics is another option the owner can add to their vehicle to make it theirs.

Look at some of the other posts on this forum. We are all talking about wheels, larger tires, possible lift kits, paint color options, sound systems, u-connect etc. We all want to make it our own Renegade. Add the options we like and opt out of the ones we don’t like.
