Sergio Marchionne is all about creating lofty goals for himself, and his latest lofty goal is to double Jeep sales by 2018 to 1.9 million vehicles. That is a huge goal.

Reuters surveyed analysts, and they have a more modest view of what to expect by the year 2018. They say that Jeep sales are probably going to sell just over 1.2 million by 2018, from a projected 1 million this year.

Counters longtime auto analyst and consultant Maryann Keller: "Realistically, he's not going to make the numbers."
Even if Jeep doesn't double sales by 2018, it will likely be FCA's largest brand by that time, probably accounting for about 25% of total volume.

Marchionne expects FCA sales to reach 7 million by 2018, but analysts are expecting 5.1 million.

I agree with the analyst. Not gonna happen.

To grow like that, you either need a rocking growing economy all over, starting like.... now. Or you need to eat someone else's lunch. That means you have to look at the makers in peril, definitely in multiple markets, probably in multiple segments beyond passenger vehicles.

I think that marchionee likes to set big goals to really light a fire under the companies rear end. With a goal like that everyone will be working super hard, and hopefully that means that FCA will be able to surpass analyst predictions even if the company doesn't meet its own goal.

I'm not sure about their numbers doubling, it's something i hope can happen, but i do however see really good growth happening. Especially if they come out with that other entry-level vehicle they were supposed to be coming out with, which could do well enough.

Yea the boys on the street are certainly unimpressed with Sir Sergio. He's a propagandist, promises one thing so far into the the future that by the time the time comes round we've all forgotten and new goals can be set. VW does this consistently, USSR was famous for it, Goebbels pioneered it ;)

The plan seems quite dependant on China, except there is one problem, China cannot and will not grow perpetually. Signs of slowdown are already showing themselves. How often do they realistically think the Chinese market can turn over new vehicle sales?

Ah this is why we're importing western philosophy to the poor Chinese, they just don't understand consumable happiness, but they will, oh yes they will ;)

There is an unnamed (Compatriot) Jeep that is supposed to fit between the Renegade and the Cherokee.

Plus, there is the Wagoneer on it's way.
And nowhere has anyone said it was entry level, much less what it will be or if it will be remotely appealing. There's essentially zero growth potential one can count on in a nameless, description-less vehicle.

I mean what if, for example and argument, the c-segment SUV was the new wrangler, or at leas t a short wheelbase version of it? Would it it sell more than 200k a year? If not, it wouldn't offset the loss.

The Wagoneer will apparently take aim at the Land Rover Discovery Sport. It will not be a faux wood sided retro vehicle that will appeal to skinny, aging hipsters with kids. The Wrangler crowd will not be pleased, once again.

Considering how high taxes are in Europe to own something so big and luxurious, it seems aimed at the US, middle east, and China, just like the Discovery Sport.

But a target of 2 million Jeeps sold globally? Not even close. We're are inching towards peak Jeep right now, and in the US, the discounts and low interest rates cannot go on forever. For the third time in 11 years, Americans are buying new cars at a shocking rate. They did it in 2002, then 2009, and now 2014. It amazes me. The Renegade almost could not come at a better time to finance a new vehicle.

We'll see if spring is a good time. If they manage to deliver it then either.
