Hello everyone! Stoked to join the world of Renegade owners. I have a couple of questions and I apologize if they have already been answered elsewhere in the forum.
1: When I start my Renegade after it has cooled down, the motor is very "throaty" with a deep sound. It seems to mellow out when the engine reaches operating temperature. Is this cause for concern and if so what should I be checking?
2: How long and when should I be letting the turbo cool down after driving.
Well, I've got a 2021 Trailhawk with the 1.3T engine. I know your don't have the same engine, but I'd imagine this part is similar -- according to the Owner's Manual:
TURBOCHARGER “COOL DOWN” —
IF EQUIPPED
This vehicle is equipped with an after-run pump
to cool the turbocharger after the engine is shut
off. Depending on the type of driving and the
amount of cargo, the pump will run for up to
10 minutes after the engine has been shut off
to circulate coolant through the turbocharger.
Although the pump is rubber-mounted for quiet
operation, it is normal to hear it running during
this time.
I have a 2017 Renengade with the 1.4T and 6 speed MT. It is a fun car with a great engine and transmission.
I have not noticed a throaty sound when first running the vehicle. Try checking the forums for the Fiat 500 and Dodge Dart, as they use the same engine. I personally would not be worried about it unless it caused a driveability issue.
You shouldn't immediately drive away when starting or immediately shut down the engine when stopping. It is a good practice to let the vehicle run about one minute. That will let the engine and turbo warm up or cool down. But that doesn't need to be more than one minute or so.
I have a 2016 1.4 L MT - exact same car. I've described the initial engine sound as a "growl". It evens out after a minute or so. Sounds like you have the exact same thing. Be warned - it gets a little worse as the weather gets colder. While it sounds bad, I have yet to experience any issue with it.
My 2015 does the exact same thing on startup from 50 deg and colder. I start her first then do buckle, radio, etc for a minute. Engine runs like summertime as soon as water and oil temps approach normal. My 90k engine oil lab analysis says everything is great.
Probably the passenger side motor mount. Our 2017 1.4 was making metal-to-metal contact (the rubber bushing had compressed) and had a noticeable growl. It was worse when cold.
