Bought a BRAND NEW Renegade North 4X4 Last Friday, drove 190 miles home so now total 256 miles on it as it had been out for a few "test drives" as I was told at the Dealership, the next day being Saturday I went to go to the store for Milk and there is NO 4 WD, the 4WD light won't come on nor will the selector move to "snow"(we have a foot of the fresh stuff), it just stays in "Auto" with only FWD and gets stuck, and now it is showing errors on the dash as follows:
* Dynamic Steering Torque Service Req'd
* Service ESC System
* Service Hill Start System

What gives here ?
Is this a common problem with Renegades ?
Has anyone else here experienced this problem with their BRAND NEW Renegade and if so what was the fix ?

Going back to the Dealership Tuesday morning, but we need a RELIABLE 4WD where I live here in Canada, hence why we bought it ?

I will keep this thread updated as the repair process on the Renegade moves forward at the dealership, and the final "Fix", because from my research here and around the internet, this seems to be a somewhat common problem ?
* NO 4WD,
* Dynamic Trq Service Req'd,
* Service ESC,
* Service Hill Start
with the "Traction Control Off" Icon appearing on the instrument cluster and it's T.C. button unresponsive

Although,
from the other reports I could find no feedback of what the definitive "Fix" was ?

It's never fun to have a problem with a Brand New Vehicle ?
that said,
I have to say that even for the brief 200 miles we drove the little Renegade home from the dealership in a Canadian Winter storm dumping 12" of snow, through the Rocky Mountain passes where we live, to say that we were IMPRESSED with the way it hugged the road and dealt with the horrible road conditions would be an UNDERSTATEMENT !
The little Renegade was fantastic in "Snow" mode, never getting stuck, never sliding around, and it was unbelievably stable delivering a much appreciated confidence in such conditions.
I think FCA have a winner here folks ?

There's no difinitive fix because the errors are largely generic. There are lots of fixes to a number of problems that cause said error warnings.

You seem to have a steering error and hill start error, which are novel, but the ESC and AWD error are not.

-Pretty much ANY kind of issue with transmission data, either an error or unparsable garbage data, will cause the system to disable AWD.
-Any kind of issue with ABS sensors will cause the AWD to disable as well as ESC and traction control, because it can now no longer monitor (or decided it is getting bad data it can't trust) wheel spin. Which is needed for TC, ESC, ABS, and AWD to function properly.
-Anything that causes can-bus data to get corrupted or puts garbage on the can-bus. Which has been any of the following: crushed wiring harness causing a short, bad PCM, firmware bug for transmission, bad grounding, etc. This however tends to create more errors.

There's also the very unfortunate souls who get the electric gremlin and have a bunch of errors and bunch of bad symptoms and nobody seems to be able to fix it. They are in the minority though.

Your errors mostly have a theme everything on your list, TC disable, ESC error, AWD error and dynamic sterring torque service required (DST is part of ESC to control driver input making skid problems worse) are all ESC related. The only one not obviously interconnected is hill start, but mainly because I don't know exactly how jeep implements theirs. If they use wheel spin as part of the calculation, then it's bundles with all your other errors.

I'd say #1 odds are wheel spin sensor(s) having an issue. However, that would suggest you shoudl also be getting an ABS error of some sort.

#2 is I would say vehicle angle sensor. If they use something like a 6 axis sensor, you need that working to determine incline angle (hill start and TC), as well as vehicle yaw (ESC needs this as does DST), AWD punts easily, I suspect lack of vehicle inclination info would cause it to punt. ABS might need that ingo, but for what ABS needs to do, it can get around needing vehicle position and compute almost all it's info from differential wheel spin.

OK, so we took Renny back to the local Dealership, 3 hrs later it's "good to go".
So the story goes....
seems it had sat at the dealership a little too long before we purchased it ? and somehow it got missed and required 5 Computer software updates. The Dealer supplied us a sheet showing each of the 5 "old" software versions, and the corresponding 5 "new" software communication versions for each that they downloaded and installed for the ESC, Hill Start, Dynamic Steering Torque, BCM and TC control modules ?
I will admit to being a bit of a Techno-tard here.... nonetheless, about 3 hrs later(same day) we picked up Reny and everything seems in good working order.
Still LOTS of compact snow/ice on our Highways, I am pretty darn impressed with the Renny's stability, and even better handling on our side roads with plus 1 ft of snow/ruts/drifts.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that the "updates" were the problem and now fixed for good, because if it is ? This little Renny is a Canadian Winter WINNER in my books !

I had similar issues on a road trip in May of this year. I have a 2016 75th Anniversary Edition with the 1.4L turbo engine and manual 6-speed transmission. Mileage at the time was about 10,500. During the trip, we drove hundreds of miles in light-to-heavy rain and on the fourth day of the trip I got the following error codes, along with the related idiot lights and a complete lack of power steering assist:

* Dynamic Steering Torque Service Req'd
* Service ESC System

The power steering system ceased to function but I have no way of knowing whether the ESC system disabled itself. I was on the NJ turnpike with no good location to pull over, so I drove to my destination. After about 45 minutes of key-off standing, I re-started the vehicle. The warning lights were cleared and all vehicle functions returned to normal. The symptoms did not occur again on the remainder of the trip.

On my return home I took the Renegade to the dealer for service of these problems as well as a cruise control that would frequently stop working and not resume functioning untl a key-off restart. Unfortunately, the dealer found no error codes for any of the problems (power steering, ESC and cruise control), they could not replicate the problems, they found no necessary software updates and basically said that there was nothing further they could do.

None of this was very satisfying and I'm left without any effective remedy or recourse. This is not encouraging or reassuring and in the back of my mind I have a nagging feeling that days of driving in very wet conditions may have had some influence on the problems.

Guess I'm not the only one

My 2016 Trailhawk is also giving the Service Hill Start, ESC System, & Dynamic Steering Torque errors. No 4WD. This was after I went through mud in the lane that goes through the hay field. A little disappointed if a Jeep can't handle that. Kinda worried about the coming winter.

I've only had it 2 months. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Hi Rene,
I understand why this would be concerning. Let us know via private message if you decide to have your dealer look into this so we be of some assistance to you while your Jeep is at the dealer.

We've been having something like this. It also includes e-brake, ABS, and power steering. It first happened to me once and never happened again and then a few days ago it happened to my wife like 4 times in a row and it actually shut the car off even while moving.
It happened to me today twice again.
I've read on another thread that it could be caused by a poorly seated connection and browsing through the Repair Manual I figured out that all those services end up in the Body Control Module and that perhaps the bad seating is somewhere in those wiring harnesses.

Anyone knows about this? I'm starting to think about pushing the Renny off a cliff.

I made a thread because I think I fixed it. We took it to the dealer (we're in Colombia) and they said that it was due some water in the engine compartment fuse box. It happened again on the way home. I opened the dash fuse box and pressed the top left cable in and it clicked in a little bit further and it hasn't happened again. Will keep you posted.

You saying your Renegade handled well in the snow is causing me to think my husband was right in saying my Renegade lost steering control in the last snow we had. There was maybe two inches on the ground when the accident happened. It had only been snowing about an hour and we had people passing us on the main road. when I noticed we were moving off of the road toward a guard rail which we ended up slamming in to. He said the steering would not let him gain control that the steering wheel. He said it was turning almost all the way around. I am in a debate with my insurance company about it being repaired while it sits in my yard. When it does get repaired, I am selling it! I am afraid to get back in to it.

Same issues, but completely resolved

I recently bought a 2016 Trailhawk with 31k miles. Almost immediately after purchase (from Carmax), I received four errors:
  • Dynamic Steering Torque
  • ESC
  • Hill Descent
  • Parking Brake

I first contacted Jeep's service department, and the tech indicated that they had seen this error before and it's usually a bad module. They had my Renegade for about a week. Since getting it back about 30 days ago, I have driven hundreds of miles, done a fully-packed camping trip and even done some mud-slinging off-road challenges with zero issues at all.

PS - Carmax was great, covered all costs for repair and supplied me with a loaner Renegade while getting the module replaced.

I have a very similar issue over the last week with my 2015 4WD 2litre with 30,000 on the clock. For no apparent reason multiple errors flashed up. The first referred to steering torque, but then at least 5 others including ABS, Hill Assist, ESC, Electronic parking brake, and 4WD errors.

Switched off and restarted. After about a mile the same errors. Disconnected the battery and restarted. All fine for a while then the same thing happened again after a few days and about 75 miles. Restarted and all has been good now for about 70 miles but I am sure that the light show will happen again! Telephoned main dealer, they had not heard of it and they can’t even get me in for a month! Any ideas please? Are these errors all connected? The car seems fine otherwise. I am therefore assuming this is a glitch of some sort and therefore the car is safe to drive until I get it in at the dealer’s.

Any thoughts welcome please!

Since I received the exact same errors at the exact same amount of miles, it's likely that it the exact same module. Here is what my paperwork from the Jeep service department states:

Concern: Customer states svc parking brake, svc esc, svc hill assist and svc dynamic steering lights have all come on at the same time.
Cause: Found internal component failure set in ABS. Found small leak present in pump lines.
Correction: Replaced pump and verified electronic braking system works properly. Verified all wiring is good as well.

The tech mentioned to me that the parking brake hydraulic line was leaking, and that an ABS module was failing. You can try calling other local mechanics and see if this is something that they can look at and repair so you don't have to wait a month. Good luck!

Thank you so much bkl182 for that useful information. It is so kind of you to let me have that detail and it will be a great starting point for me to mention to the service department - when I eventually get there! (Two UK JEEP dealerships have closed in the same area so consequently the remaining ones are booked solid which isn’t good). More dealerships in the Midlands UK please Jeep!

Hello, I'm having the same issues. The dealer couldn't pull any codes so couldn't do anything. They drove it around but of course if didn't do it. I have taken pictures of the dash from the last 2 times to keep track.
Codes disappear when you turn it off and restart it so far. I'm thinking of getting a code reader so I can take pictures and show them the codes. Can anyone recommend a not to expensive model that will work?

Thing has only 8k+ miles on it and i'm getting the ripped off feelilng....

Thanks for the info.

It did it this morning when I just stopped at the bank. Thankfully its never messed with the driving. Ran it by the dealer and they told me it was showing codes for a bad wheel sensor and some other things. Wasn't told what other things but the service guy didn't seem concerned. Told me he would check on when they could get the part and go from there. Hopefully this will take care of it.
