Noisy Idling & Bad MPG

23795 Views 19 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Tuffy
I purchased a Renegade 4x2 Lattitude about a week ago and have put only ~250 miles on it. I noticed that when standing outside my vehicle while it is idling, that is is kind of noisy. I can hear the shaking and rattling noises from 10-20ft away. I'm planning on taking it into the dealer soon anyways for tint and some other items, and I will ask the service department to check it out. Also, I my MPG is horrible so far. I know it takes a bit to break it in, but so far I am only averaging 17mpg based on the trip computer. My driving is mostly city with lots of stops and starts, but I did rack up at least 1/4 of those miles on the freeway, so you'd think I'd be somewhere in the mid 20's at least. Maybe the mpg has something to do with the noisy idling.

My TH idle is slightly noisier than I'd expect, but then again, this is the first 4 cylinder I've owned in about 13 years. I checked the oil just to make sure, and it was full. I've gotten used to the noise now and it certainly doesn't drive like it's having any issues. Most new cars utilize a larger plastic cover with rubber isolators to help cut down on engine noise. The Renegade is lacking this as well.

As far as the MPG, there could be many factors attributing to your number. Bad fuel, tire pressure, how much you use the A/C, how you accelerate, etc. Not to mention, the computer figure could be inaccurate. Your best bet is to fill it up, reset your mileage trip counter, and run the fuel down to E. Then old school it and divide the miles driven by the fuel tank size for the most accurate number.

Hey! I remember this post from Reddit.. :). I already chatted with you on MPG and agree with Commando's comments.

I don't really think my idle noise is that bad, but it's not shaky either. I'm curious what your service department says.

Yeah, I just found out about this forum and the subreddit was pretty bare, so figured I'd post here.

I am going to try and take it to the dealer tomorrow if I can before I head out of town. I don't think it's anything bad, but just want to make sure. I just traded in my '09 Dodge Caliber which had developed a major shaking while idling issue that got even worse. Part of me expected this new car to be whisper quiet and I didn't even notice it until my wife pointed it out.

I just took a video of it. I have to say the video sounds much louder than it does in person, but I guess it can help explain it a little bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdM9UOtCaiM

If anyone asks about the noise, I just tell them thats what a Tigershark sounds like.
Mine has an off idle, think that is common of the tigershark. Your does sound loud tho!
Geeze.. That is loud. Mine sounds nothing like that..
My trailhawk is about as loud as my midengine mr2 spider was. I actually enjoy the louder noise. Can actually hear the engine and make it feel less go carty. But yes I agree compared to a normal 4cyl it's louder poll because of what that previous poster said , lack of sound dampening in the engine compartment. Plus side is now I won't have to remove the air box and put in a cold air intake to make engine louder.

I don't know what a Tigershark sounds like, but first thing I thought was a clogged fish tank pump. That really does not sound kosher.

I took into the dealer today for the tint that they owed me. I mentioned the engine noise to the service agent checking it in and he said that it seems normal and that something something and that's why it is more fuel efficient. For the MPG issue, they said they'd want to see a little more history on the vehicle, both on paper and the trip computer. I'm planning a 300 mile trip here, so I will double my mileage and get a better idea. This latest tank has been hovering in 16 and 15.8 mpg, so it's not getting better (though at the same time I am getting less highway action - but still that is bad). They say they haven't seen any mpg issues so far, but just concern over the Range not being accurate because the Average Consumption is wrong. My average consumption is still showing the 30.3 that it was the day I bought it even though the trip meter since then shows 17. I'll give it some time and hope it gets better.
I have a the 2015 renegade latitude FWD, My average consumption always shows 30.3. It seems to never change. I reset my tripometer and after about 500 miles shows 23 mpg. My driving may be 75% city , 25% hwy
I have now started recording my results (x-post from the MPG thread).

Trim Level: Lattitude
Engine: 2.4 Multi-air
Current miles: 647, 890
If calculated by hand or DIC: Both
Highway/City %: Est 83/17, 74/26

Because I feel my Renegade is getting much bad MPG compared to everything else I'm reading, I'm actively tracking usage. I have created a GoogleDoc spreadsheet to help me with this.

When just driving city, I avg 17mpg. Just freeway, I avg 24mpg (according to EVIC). Note, I have been going 70-80 on freeway and my city driving involves a lot of short trips. A/C is on most of the time.

Right now I only have 2 complete fillups logged because I took a long round trip recently, so I burned a lot of fuel. I'm going to complete logging this, so the spreadsheet will be updated after every fillup (once I transfer from paper to computer).

My Trailhawk gets around 28 if driving normally and around 25 driving aggressively. My driving is a mix of city and highway.

And the engine sounds a little loud while standing in front of the car, but it sound okay from inside.
I'm averaging 30.3 mpg

Odd that this is happening to you. I'm not even trying to be conservative and I get 30.3 average - for some reason this is the max reading allowed, I think if I were to calculate it myself it'd be even better.

As for the engine noise, I noticed this too! Asked my dealer to have a look and all is normal. I've since gotten used to it and attribute the "noise" to me being used to the sound of quiet Japanese engines, as that's all I've been driving for the last 15 years.

Tuffy, is that 30.3 from the range screen which shows how many more miles you can drive on your tank? The reason I ask is because mine and it seems like everyone else that mentioned it had it set at 30.3 when they purchased it. If you reset it, you will notice it actually recalculating based on the actual mileage you are getting. If you flip over to the trip screen, I bet you wil see a different number there. While I hope you are averaging 30.3, since it is the exact number I started with, I don't think you are.
5 bucks says 30.3 is a number they throw in the computer permanently until reset for the first time. This way when people test drive it, and they look at the mpg on the screen, they are pleased with what they see.

Yes, the 30.3 is on that screen, but even after resetting on this screen as well as both Trip A & B, that screen with the "Ave. 30.3" doesn't change. In order to get real values I have to look at the Trip screen.
If I go by the trip screen I'm averaging 34 MPG [that's just today on a 30 min. ride in to work].

That's odd. The 30.3 should be resetting. Make sure you hold down the button to reset it long enough. I know the first time I tried I didn't hold it long enough for the status bar to go all the way accross.

Also, on your screen setup, you can play around with which items are shown on the main screen (MPH screen). I got mine to display the avg MPG there and it uses the Trip A numbers for that. This way you can always see your MPG and have the digital speed showing at the same time which is much easier to read.
I'm an idiot. Yup, I wasn't holding the reset long enough. D'oh!
