I have an '18 Trailhawk with the 2.4. Just hit 10k so I was set for my second oil change. Going around a turn one night last week, I got the Low Oil Pressure notification that quickly went away once I straightened out. Upon checking the oil, the stick was barely reading anything. I was 3 quarts low.

I just got back from dropping it off at the dealer for an oil change and I mentioned the low oil and he told me "off the record" (of course) that the 2.4L Tigershark engine used in the Renegade and the Compass is made of a soft aluminum that is very porous. There isn't an oil leak and the engine isn't burning oil, rather the engine is 'absorbing' the oil. The oil consumption will trail off around 15k miles.

I'm not a mechanic, but I've also never reached for a soft aluminum sponge to clean up any spills around the house. So this is either insight, or comedic relief. I'll be keeping an eye on my levels from now on.

My renegade has 24-25k miles. I got the basic warranty and noticed as of late during warmer weather it drains oil like a maniac. Should i be concerned?

Drove 600-700 since last oil change, on warm reading im about less than half on the safe zone of the dipstick. Should i go back to the dealer before my warranty expires for basic warranty?

I have a 2017 latitude 2.4 ltr. with 55k miles. It is consuming about 1 quart every 1000 miles. I want to try and reduce the consumption starting with the least change from the manual recommended oil. I have been using the recommended Pennzoil 0w20 synthetic.
Would the next thing to try be to use the High Mileage Pennzoil 0w20 synthetic or regular Pennzoil 5w20 synthetic (not high mileage)? Which should I try first? And if that doesn't work, then try the other one? After that, the Lucas Oil treatment? Thanks

Stick with the recommended 0w20, but go with a High Mileage oil.
High Mileage oils have additives that help with oil consumption, rejuvenatesseals and reduce wear.

Thanks for the info!
I've been reading up on it and that looks like the best option. If I use the Pennzoil, even the high mileage oil meets the "special" Chrysler MS-6395 requirement so it won't void the engine warranty.

If you do your own oil changes; Make sure you keep copies of the receipts with the date and miles the service was performed.

If you don't have receipts and a service log, the dealers have a 'way-out' for honoring any warranty.

Has anyone noted any engine oil consumption in their Renegade 2.4 engine?

When my car was delivered it had 190 miles, part of that was because my local dealer didn't have the color we wanted so they picked it up from another dealer. Anyway the oil level was about 1/2 between full and add marks. Maybe the engine wasn't filled at the factory? I added enough oil to bring it to the full mark.

The car now has 2800 miles, I have checked the oil several times since it was filled, yesterday I noticed it was about 1/3 down from the fill mark.

I realize that isn't a big problem but I haven't experienced that much oil use on my last several new vehicles. I also realize the oil consumption may decrease after break-in.

That said, I know most new cars now require very little or no break-in miles.

I bought my 2018 Renegade Limited in April of 2019. The first 750 miles I had to add a quart of oil. At 5600 it was ready for it's 5th quart. So instead of adding the quart I decided to have it changed. I had them put 5W-20 in rather than the 0W-20. It now has 7800 miles and oil level is still at the full mark. I see no difference in mileage. Could it be that the 0W-20 is just too thin when the engine is cold? I heard or read the cylinders have low compression rings to improve mileage. So with the low compression rings and the thin oil the oil is getting by the rings? Not sure but so far switching to the 5W-20 had made a big difference in my Renegade. I am not sure about your state but the state I live in a car manufactured can not tell you what brand or weight of oil has to be used. The manufacturer can not void the warranty.

I don't know about our Renegades, but on my Ram 1500, the computer will tell on you for using the wrong viscosity oil.
There is a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) for incorrect oil viscosity used P1521.

You are correct about: the manufacture can not tell which weight of oil or the brand that you are using. But they can tell when you use other than what viscosity is recommended.

The 0W20 is "required" due to the Variable Valve Timing (VVT). Thicker oil could cause the VVT to react slower than designed.

It isn't uncommon for oil to be consumed during the engines brake in period.

... warranty people are always looking for an excuse NOT to cover a repair.

Ok as of 12/14/19 I have 7500 miles on a 2018 Renegade I just bought on 6/27/19 it had 8 miles on it so brand new!!!! I had the first oil change done at 5000 miles at the dealer cause it was free. Lol ok getting to the point at 6500 miles I checked the oil by the way I checked the oil right after the dealer change was spot on. So I checked oil at 6500 miles oil was almost below hatch marks I'm like wtf. I have read the horror story's about oil consumption on these 2.4l motors so I was prepared!!! I had investigated just in case!!!! I bought a bottle of Lucas pure synthetic oil stabilizer $16 at Walmart for a quart bottle I drained a extra quart of oil out of the Reny I recommend doing this on a cold engine. I added the Lucas they recommend 1 bottle for 4 quarts of oil, and I added more oil as needed. Now keep in mind it's only a 1000 miles since I did this but so far the oil level has not moved I am going the check again in another 1000 miles and will keep everyone updated!!!!

Minor oil consumption would be normal.
I guess my first question would be, when are you checking it.
If you check it cold, first thing in the morning, the level would be higher then if you check it when you arrive home from a drive.
Basically, in the morning oil will drain down to the pan, raising the level.
After a drive, the block will be full of oil and the pan level would be lower.
Make sure you're checking it the same way each time.

The reason for the high oil consumption is the oil viscosity 0-W-20. This is a very light weight oil and is used to help with fuel mileage. This is no the only engine nor manufacture using this viscosity oil. Check out any other car companies forum sites and you will see this. Well the site won't let me add a link on my first post. So I'll post this and try again.

I have an 18 Renegade, 2.4 with just past 30k on it. Bought new. I read the threads about oil consumption early when I first bought it and have kept the oil always past half, being sure to check only when warm and after resting for a few minutes. I have literally put several quarts of oil through this engine since I have had it, with no evidence of any leaks. The car has slowly lost it's pep and mileage, and now runs kind of "growly" like there is some kind of uneven condition in valves or compression, and has lost about 7-10 MPG. I drive normally and have not abused it in any way. Dealer changed all but the last oil change, which was done locally. Dealer failed to change the oil when it was taken in once; I caught that when 1000 miles following service the car asked for an oil change. Oil was dark, too. I took it back and new service manager said they were sorry but they have been going through a lot of techs and probably it got missed. So when the car started to lose MPG and power a few thousand miles ago I took it in, and was told they couldn't find anything wrong. I called them on that and said the car has lost power and mileage and there has to be something wrong with it. They did start the procedure for the oil consumption test. This evening I was going to town and the check engine came on. I took it past the local parts place to get the codes run and it turns out the cat on bank 1 reports low efficiency, just like it would if oil was getting dumped into the combustion chamber for 30k miles.

So now I have tough questions, and will be at the dealer bright and early tomorrow morning. I am thinking I will likely be getting a new engine, but will likely need the cats replaced too. Then there is the question of "how do I know it won't happen again in another 30k?" I don't think they are going to have any good answers.

By the way, I was a drivability line tech in the 90s, and was very good at it. I let them know my history right off the bat when I started with this dealer. Starting to wish I bought a Toyota or something...

So I showed up this morning and let my dissatisfaction be known - I did get their attention. Let them know it is going to take some effort to get my trust back. They are going to order a new converter and it should be in about a week from now. They say they can’t tell why it failed but I’m thinking given the amount of oil that has gone through it I’m pretty sure that is what did it.
I’m pretty skeptical that this will result in anything but them getting the codes to abate and then they can tell me it’s “fine”.

We just got ours back from an oil change. Our oil on the trailhawke was 3.5 qts low. Our dealer said it's 1 L for every
2000 mi. I always thought your new car shouldn't use much oil at all. We were never told to watch for this, this could void the warrnty. Our brake fluid and radiator fluid were also below the low lines. Is that normal too?
Why do some renegades here use up oil and some don't?
My Renegade had a service 1800 miles ago, just been in for another 1l of oil, service department said that's about right ?
