I have the auto trans. It seems every time I put it into Drive I have to wait a second to hit the gas while it shifts. By a second I mean probably only a second or 2. Is this just how they are?

It's quite possible you're feeling the parking brake disengage. It takes about 1.5 seconds (or so) for the parking brake to disengage when you press the accelerator.

Mine doesn't hesitate. My method of starting is to start the car, put my foot on the foot brake, release the parking brake, and then pull the gear shift into neutral. After about a second or two, I put it into drive and it is ready to go immediately.

Maybe I'm just used to using neutral from all the years of driving manual transmission cars (my other car has a manual transmission).

Trying to get a bump on this. I'm nervous because of the horror stories. No clunking noise, but trans kind of jerks into park, and drove. No problems in reverse. Could anyone please respond? Is this common? Problematic?

I have a new Renegade with 100 miles with a build date of August and noticed the same thing almost immediately. Takes almost a full second to engage drive after I shift, same with reverse. Might be normal? Anyone else seeing this?

This is common on most of the later auto transmissions that use electric shift solenoids. GM doesn't appear to have this problem though. This delay is really annoying. I had a Jeep with a TF727 trans and it shifted soooooo much better and faster than modern transmissions. The 4 sped auto in my Saturn (LW300) that I traded for the Renegade was also leaps and bounds better at shifting. Passing is a PITA in the Renegade because you have to allow time for it to find the right gear. In the Saturn you just press tha gas pedal to the flloor and it was instant downshift and your gone.

Just because someone might mention this, the Saturn had ETC also.

Mine is pretty well instant.
However 3 times when I have put it into reverse and put my foot on the accelerator, the revs have risen but the car ( sorry Jeep) did not move. I put it into neutral back into reverse and it was fine each time.

My car was jerking very bad, I took it in they update the software but did not solved the issue, went back took a technician with me for a drive and he felt what I was talking about. Jeep took my car and kept it for 3 days, could not find a problem with the transmission, they decided to "Reset and re-educate" the transmission and it is working perfectly now, they gave it back to me Wednesday before Thanksgiving and as of right now it is working as it should. Maybe you need to talk to your dealer have them do a road test drive and get them to feel the problem, and probably they will re-educate your transmission like they did to mine. Good luck

I think my Renegade does the same thing. I always have to wait a second when I put it in drive for it to be ready. My gut tells me its normal. The new 9-speed is a whole new beast. I just try to learn how it functions as I go. I bought mine in June with a build date of December 2014 and so far I have close to 10k problem-free miles.
