Radio Changes Station on Its Own

6662 Views 25 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  veperez_landarch
Hello, I have a 2018 Jeep Renegade and 2 days ago the radio would randomly change stations on its own. I thought maybe it was just a small issue and tried listening to music through blue tooth but even using Spotify the songs would repeat and restart on their own. Does anyone know what may be causing this. I'd rather not have to take it to dealership and pay them to fix it. Thanks!!!

Welcome!

I can't help; but it might be useful if you could tell others, who could, exactly what radio system you have. There may have been multiple options for 2018; and conversely the same radio might have been available for multiple model years.
Are you sure you are not inadvertently hitting the buttons on the back of the steering wheel? the ones on the left control exactly what you are referring to.
According to the manual I have the Uconnect 4 with 7inch display...not sure if that helps or not!

I'm positive...I use those buttons all the time to change stations and it's doing it completely on my own...my husband was riding with and it started doing it and he's stumped also at this point!
Sticky buttons on wheel maybe???

That's what I'm thinking. Those little "buttons" behind the steering wheel are membrane switches; press the little button to activate. See if one was pressed too hard and is pushed in. It should have a definite "click" feeling to it when pressed; mushy, you may have issues. Sometimes you get lucky and a couple presses pops it back out. Hope that is does, because replacing that switch panel will not be cheap nor easy. Well, nothing is on this vehicle. The only cheap thing to replace is the air in your tires.....

My Jeep does this exact same thing. When you are looking at the radio's screen it appears that there is a liquid behind the glass, and where the liquid is touching the on-screen buttons it acts as if they are being "hit"... causing the radio to change channels, "Fav" songs, even jump around from radio/navigation/phone.

I have never spilled anything on the dash of my Jeep, I do not know how this liquid got back there. Also note the jumping around thing only happens on HOT days.
I have a 2020 Renegade and just started having the same issue! No I'm not touching the sensors on the wheel, I hold the wheel at the bottom. Never had any kind of drink on my dash & don't leave windows open. We just had a bought of excessive heat..I wonder if that did anything? This is very annoying!I lease my jeep, I wonder if they'd fix it?? 🤔

Hey ya'all.. i stopped by my Jeep dealer recently and the service manager saw what the radio was doing and stated the glass display is "delaminating" nothing can be done other that replace the radio. and my card was FIVE days out of warranty. :-(

hope this helps.

Ouch.

Sometimes, in "close" cases like this (or even in not-close cases), a car manufacturer will do a "good-will" warranty coverage in order to keep a customer.

In your case, you've got evidence (from your Apr 19 post) that the problem had occurred several months before this. That should certainly help... Certainly worth asking...

Incidentally, specifically which radio system do you have?

They did give me a nice discount for the replacement. I love my JEEP Dealer!!!

2020 Grand Cherokee doing the same thing on Sxm and the radio. Always changes to preset 1. No damage, condensation, or accidental button pressing. 🤔
Just had the same issue as you on 2018. I replaced the touchscreen and it fixed the problem. In my case there was a wave pattern on the top of the screen where it was delaminating.

How do you replace touchscreen I have exactly same problem
I rolled through several options and did a lot of research on parts and used salvage radios etc.

If it is under warranty, or a close call number one would go to dealer. Jeepcares can help sort that send them your vin and then can make recommendations.

If not, you can Google the how to pull the radio. How to replace the screen videos and then located the part and swapped it out. It may be a bit of a challenge if you are not comfortable with this step options are find a car radio store To do the labor or go to the dealer.

my model year was one of the first to have 8.4 screens. That took awhile to figure out. First thing is I’ddo is make sure you know what model year, options installed and then see what replacement costs will run.

Seems to be the problem with mine I think. 😕 but I have a rubicon.
It is very likely the touchscreen. If it is out of warranty, try for a good will replacement with dealer as someone posted previously. You can try ordering a salvage radio online but you will need to get an anti theft radio code either from dealer or possibly online sources advertise resets. LKQ online has a search by model, year and options with a return policy if you decide to go that route. You should run through the how to pull the radio videos before to make sure you have all the right tools to get the bezel off and to fit the star screw heads. Check the connections in the back of the radio, take photos and get all the original part numbers to make sure you have the right radio.

Having the same issue…there should be a recall since this is consistent. I have 2018 GC Limited

It does thanks
I had the. Same thing. I replaced the screen and kept the radio. You need a star screwdriver and a couple of screw drivers to pry off the bezel and a star screw diver to take out the radio. Need to whether you have 7” or 8.4 screen. Could probably get an audio dealer to do the replacement or there are folks that will replace the screen and ship it back to you. Dealer cost wa something like $1500 or so for me. I did it for $500 on a 2018 linited
