Hello Gentlemen, have some questions. I thought I knew cars but I don't work on things for a living so don't know the ins and outs.

I own a 2016 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 4x4 2.4L with 37,500 miles.

Went to dealership today for an oil change and following is on recommended service:
-Description: BG 4x4 Serv; Operation: 02CHZBG4x4
-Description: BG Rear Diff; Operation: 02CHZBGDIFFR
-Description: BG Front Diff; Operation: 02CHZBGDIFFF
-Description: BG T-Case Serv; Operation: 02CHZBGTCASE

What do each of these mean? Are they trying to scam me (want $700 total)? I was given a paper claiming alignment issues showing everything in red; I'm skeptical as hell my alignments are bad because my tire wear is even, and I have no pull on flat road (wheel release test at 70mph stays good for good 8 seconds). I don't take this off-road (although living in shithole Michigan now put last 20k on it here), I have no abnormal noise issues. My father and I used to work on cars together and I'm an engineer for a living in Auto industry, anything off I check out, including noise, and would I like to think I'm not completely ignorant.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Sounds like they think they’re servicing a Wrangler. We have no front diff, it’s the transmission. The rear end is so small, it MAY take a liter of fluid. You’re capable if you’ve turned any wrench before. We don’t have a t-case we have a PTU bearing. And an electronic switch.

Like @Mrsig said, find a new dealer

Edit: Alignment checks are free at most tire shops, and a program to get future alignments can be had for 90$-190$ at my shop (NTB)

Pages 515-521 of your 2016 Jeep Renegade Owner's Manual describe the required maintenance at each service interval. The only items on your dealer's "wish list" that are remotely like anything in the maintenance requirements is the need to check the PTU and rear differential fluid levels at 40,000 miles.

It looks like your dealer has its own list of service items, some sounding pretty vague, and none tied to any specific factory requirements, that they'd like to offer and charge for. Just Say No.

As far as the alignment is concerned, if they didn't give you a print-out of exactly what specifications were out, and by how much, it's very likely that they are just fishing for business. Again, Just Say No.

And, find a new dealership.

Thanks guys, was my thoughts exactly. I never say yes to anything without being thorough. I'll find a new place. I did scam them into giving me 3 oil change package for $155 through mopar.

I'm willing to bet that that dealership has a franchise for BG Products {https://www.bgprod.com/}, and they're trying to push them to their customers, whether or not the customers really need them based on the necessary service and service intervals specified by the car manufacturer. Could be quite lucrative for a service dept that relies on the general ignorance of the car driving public about car maintenance. As others have said, RUN AWAY from this shop!

Anyone know where to find information on how to check your PTU and rear differential fluid level yourself?
It doesn't take any specialty tools or procedures does it? I've checked rear differential in other vehicles before by removing a plug.
Thanks

My past experience a few years ago at a Jeep/Chrysler dealership (that is no more, thankfully)...

I went in with my 2002 PT Cruiser for an oil change. The service desk was crowded, I was like 2nd in line at desk #2 . At the counter of desk #1 was an older lady, late 60's-early 70's. She said she wanted her oil changed on her Grand Cherokee. The service tech tapped on his computer, said she needed her brakes flushed, tranny oil changed, rear diff drained and radiator flushed if it failed the test. She meekly said, "I just wanted my oil changed...". He said she HAD to get it all done or she risked breaking down or voiding her warranty. I glanced outside, her Jeep was maybe 1-2 years old, I bet it had damn near 0 miles on it... She said it was her only car how long would it take. He said they couldn't start at this late hour but they'll give her a courtesy ride over to Enterprise Rent-a-Car to rent a car. She walked outside to wait.

My turn at my desk. She asked, "How can we help you today ?". Dead-pan serious, I said, "I need to see a manager NOW.". She tried to help, "Is there something I can do ?". I said, "NOW". She picked up her phone and called. A guy comes in and says, "Is there something wrong, sir ?. I say, "Yes there is. That guy (I point to the guy at desk #1 ) is a DICK." then I repeat the tactic he used to pressure the old lady waiting outside. The manager said, "Is this all true ?" and before he could answer, everyone else waiting in line says, "YES !!" in unison. The manager goes to his computer, looks at everything then says, "It doesn't all have to be done RIGHT NOW. Go back and get her, someone else write her up, then come to my office." He hemmed and hawed then walked outside.

When my oil was changed, before I left I popped the hood, checked my dipstick and drain plug. Y'never know who is drinking buddies are.

The next time I went for an oil change, he wasn't there. There was different people at the counter. I asked, "Where's Tim ?". "Oh, he's no longer with us.". To be honest, I hope I'm the one that got him fired, I really do. Trying to screw over an old lady....

I once had a mechanic say I needed new spark plugs. I said, "Really ? Are they bad ?". He said yes. I said loudly, "I PUT NEW ONES IN 10 MINUTES BEFORE I DROPPED MY CAR OFF AND I LIVE A 1/4 MILE FROM YOU !!". His "cover story" ? "Oh, we go by mileage on the vehicle, not many people change their own plugs anymore.". Yeah, nice try.

Moral of the story: Just because they say you need it, doesn't mean you NEED it.

Yeah, it seems now days a lot of stealerships are cut throat horrible. I remember a Midas dealer that was that way. You go in for a muffler and suddenly you needed everything else. My father-in-law saw a old lady story there. The lady was in tears. He told her to go somewhere else, she didn't need all that. Fortunately, they went out of business.

I don't want to take my Jeep in. I just wanted to check PTU and rear diff. Myself. I just need to know how/where to do it.

I keep looking for a Haynes/Chilton repair manual for this Jeep every time I go to an auto parts store. Ironically, you can still buy a manual for a CJ-2A, but not for this Renny. Hopefully soon, they've been out for nearly 4 years now.

Good Idea! I used to use those and completely forgot about them. With the internet and YouTube, I'm so used to looking online for everything.

Haynes site does not show them making it yet.

Look at this crap on the Chilton site! Apparently they don't do a printed manual anymore. Now they want you to pay a subscription fee to access the information. Forget that!

After reading your story, I have to ask if you live in Houston, Texas as we had a dealer ship in which the Service people acted just like that! The only difference was the Service Manager was the type to support his writer, not the customer. Fortunately, the Dealership has since changed hands and, as I understand it, the entire Service Department has been changed.

Close. I live in Cypress, just NW of Houston. The dealer was Archer Jeep on 290. That dealership closed about 9-10 years ago, the property was bulldozed and another building built on the land.

Truth be told, not all the service reps there were bad. I've actually bought two brand new vehicles there in the past, my 2002 PT and my wife's 2005 Jeep Liberty. You just had to be on your toes with the service reps. I once took my wife's Jeep there for an oil change and the rep said, "Time to get the differential oil changed.". I looked him dead in the eye and said, "No it's not." and I didn't break eye contact. Hard staring at someone when they know are lying will break them every time. Try it. He said "Okay." and moved on.
