Replaced garbage stock wheel bolts

The used Renegade that I bought still had the stock garbage capped wheel bolts. Like mentioned in other posts a 17mm socket did not fit most of the bolts anymore. I ordered a set of Otis Inc. LA Silver Wheel Bolts from NGEN Customs & Performance. They don't list Renegade so you need to select the option for the 500x to get the correct set.

I found that an 11/16" 6pt socket was the best size to remove the existing bolts. I used teflon grease on the inside of the socket to keep them from getting too stuck, but still needed to use a long bolt to pop out a couple bolts from the socket. Off course putting in the new bolts was easy and I am confident these will stay the same 17mm socket size in the future!

so why are they longer than oem? i see madness has bolts too. does that mean they thread more in? what if they break? 5mm more would be a pain to drill out

The bolts go all the way through the disc hub. A longer bolt (on the same thickness wheel) will not have additional thread penetration. And... that's really a weird thing to be worried about.

Not really. If they stick so far through the hub that they touch or hit something behind it, then that would be...bad.

I was wondering about that when I bought a set of aftermarket solid-steel bolts to replace the chrome-capped OEM some time ago. The diameter and thread pitch were correct, and the Ebay listing showed they fit the current Renegade. But they were several millimeters longer than the OEM bolts.

I couldn't see what the clearance was behind the hub well enough with the Trailhawk on the ground, so I asked a trusted local shop to install the bolts and check out the clearance.

Turned out that while the aftermarket bolts were the correct diameter and tread pitch, there was another issue with them...the cone size was different, so the bolts wouldn't contact as much of the wheel as the OEM bolts. The shop justifiably refused to install them.

I finally got black Mopar solid-steel bolts that were identical dimensions to the chrome-capped ones.

My comment was in reply to the concern of it being more difficult to drill out a longer bolt when it breaks off in the disc hub.
