Had a very similar experience. My service air bag alert was going on an off. Then my power steering also stopped working, and my check engine light came on. Then I had problems shutting off the engine. Same thing. This happened last fall, and was due to a low battery. The new battery fixed everything, but then the issue came back a month or so ago. I took it to an independent garage near me with an impeccable reputation. The manager did a lot of research, and determine it was likely the ignition switch. he sent me the following link:

The shop replaced the ignition switch, and all of the issues went away, and my jeep has been problem free since.

Yeah, all I can say is that what you're describing - air bag alert, service engine light, power steering light, losing power steering, taking the keys out and the car still running, problems starting after a cold start-up - sounds identical to my situation. Perhaps they could start with the ignition switch?

Nice!!!! An update for me - everything is still running perfectly. Safe to say it was my ignition switch.

DFrank - I think that was the right call. If you think of it, please update us in a few weeks and let us know if everything is still working well.

I can't believe the dealership wanted to replace the entire steering column..... nice call on your part.
