The dealership told me the same thing a few months ago. It seems that there are decorative silver covers over the actual lug nuts, and it's those covers that became "swollen". I was told that they could break the covers off to get to the lug nuts, but I asked them to hold off for now and skipped my scheduled tire rotation. Same dealer a few months later said that although they were swollen, one of their techs was able to get them off without issue. Hope this helps!

W E L C O M E ! ! ! to the forum.

This usually happens when the wrong size socket is used to remove or install (tighten) the lug nuts. The stainless steel cap (stupid idea) becomes deformed (swollen) when a; for example, a standard socket is used on a metric lug bolt.

The lug bolts will need to be replaced.
The original lug studs can be removed by using a socket that will fit over the swollen lug bolt. It might even be necessary to beat a socket on to the swollen lug bolt to get them off (6 point socket is preferred, (less likely to slip)).

Other vehicle makers such as Ford and even Land Rover like to use lug nuts (or bolts) with chrome caps. Moisture, and if you live in the salt belt, salt) will get in between the cap and nut, rust, and swell the chrome so a socket will not fit. Deal with it all the time. Not fun.

I posted somewhere on here my experiences with them lug bolts. I was at the dealer for my free oil change and tire rotation. I noticed the service tech hammering a socket onto the bolts. I went to the service desk to show my displeasure. I was informed that because of the chrome caps, if they use a socket that fits the caps, the caps will spin off/get loose, using a hammer is now normal procedure to force the stupid caps tighter onto the bolts.

Tires have been rotated 3 times now, no issues.

I just had to replace ALL of the lug bolts on my wifes 2017 renegade. The garage wouldnt rotate my tires. Every single oem lug bolt was swollen. I ordered a lug nut buster (Irwin Tools 53911 Irwin Industrial Tool Co Extractor 17mm ) and a set of 20 12x1.25 Wheel Lug 17mm Studs . I used a breaker bar to get them out. what a PITA. I live in the northeast, so lots of rain snow, ice, salt.
There should be a recall or a lawsuit.

I replaced my "lug bolts" with studs and nuts from Modern Performance. They were a little expensive but invaluable when trying to change tires in the field. Lining up holes and holes when you are holding up a tire in the dark is a real PIA. I used red loctite on the studs and made them "farmer tight." I've never had an issue with them since.

My Wife has been taking her 2016 Jeep Renegade to her dealership since new, all tire rotations have been done by them and told her today she needed all of her swollen bots replaced. I agree they need a recall on this.

Recall, recall, recall that's all I seem to read nowadays on this forum.

Get your wallet out and pay a few $$$s. Some of you are so miserable and want everything for nothing.

If there was a recall involved your Jeep would have been recalled. Well it hasn't been recalled so get on with your life and part with the cash.

Rant over!!

I went to Bj's a week ago and they wouldn't put my new tires on because the lug nuts are "swollen". Anyone have this issue? What should I do now?
I was looking for anyone who has had this happen. I just returned from AAA Bob Sumerel Tire and had an oil change and rotation due, and tech said renegades are having problems with lug bolts swelling when they get wet?? i already replaced 13 last tire rotation and this time I need 20? I am seriously filing a complaint with anyone that will listen because this is a new car that only gets driven 8K-10K miles a year. I've never heard of this and am selling asap but wanted to know if anyone else has run into this issue? They told me everyone's out of lug bolts for jeep so that tells me I'm not the only person buying them.

Update- I contacted Jeep Consumer Affaira and explained what techs are saying and people on this forum and asked about a recall, and she said no one has issued a recall for this reason as of today but she also told me I could get bolts and have the tires rotated and Jeep would reimburse me with an invoice or receipt..
