I test drove a black Latitude here in CT today, 9 speed auto, 2.4, nicely loaded with power seats, heated steering wheel, all that stuff. I had mixed feelings about the car, which I'll list below. Bottom line - we might buy one in a few months, but we're going to go cross-shop some other vehicles first.

Our first impression walking up to the Renegade was that it's huge. But I knew better. The Renegade is an inch shorter than my Soul, the same width, but a crucial 3" higher. The blocky design makes it look much bigger than it really is.

My 5'0" wife almost couldn't sit in the driver's seat because the thigh support goes out so far. With longer legs, it was comfortable for me. If you're short, think about the seats. She said it was literally painful to get through a 15 minute test drive.

The seating height was awesome if you're into high seating (we are). We parked our Soul next to the Renegade to compare, and our eyes were at least a full head higher in the Renegade.

The driving dynamics were fine. The car is reasonably quiet and goes about its duties in a competent manner. Unless you're an idiot on the road, this car has higher limits than you, but that goes for any 2015 car you buy.

The interior materials were a nice quality and a soft look. I frankly expected a much more garish interior from the pictures, but it was OK if you like a macho American truck design aesthetic. I found the Jeep Easter eggs tedious after about 30 seconds.

If you like things square and solid, and you like feeling like you're in a tank riding down the road - this is your vehicle. In fact, my wife liked it for that very reason. And the dealer told us he could shorten the seat a bit for her.

If you like your design sparse, restrained, elegant and European - this ain't that. A good example are the huge A-pillars. I felt like I was looking at the world ahead through a tank periscope. Rear visibility was OK.

Drive it for yourself and make your own conclusions. I sort of liked it, but it didn't blow me away.

I think this thread would work better if you sort of mention what it is exactly you're going for. From a performance, capability, interior, amenities, and looks standpoint, I don't see how the Soul even compares, and only beats it in price. I think most would agree (being a Renegade forum and all). What is it exactly that you are looking for?

I think the visibility is excellent. The windshield is huge and easy to see out of. I don't think the A pillars are large at all. If they were thinner, the structural integrity of the car wouldn't be as robust as it is. I really like how solid this vehicle feels.

I find the a-pillar comment amusing since 1) they are inherited form the 500L platform. 2) They are more an engineering thing than a design thing. And 3) Fatter a-pillars for safety purposes were a thing that was pushed form the EU market back in the 80s (lookin at you Saab and Volvo).

If you don't like them, hey people like what they like. But they are pretty European in their origin.

I was pleasantly surprised by the interior. I thought it was going to be much worse, and I'm coming from only driving european cars for the last 15+ years. The materials were pretty good, except for the chrome-esque plastic knobs/rings which felt super cheap. All told it felt like a euro interior mated to a jeep exterior. I think it's a cool combo although I'd do some things differently (more european, less american). The a-pillar doesn't bother me.

I do agree that the 'easter eggs' thing is cheesy and unnecessary. I mean it's fine to include them but to call them out like a feature is kinda lame and reminds me of why I've been turned off of american cars for decades.

I drove one of the first ones to get to Georgia today, and I totally agree. It feels like a TANK, and in a good way! Solid, sturdy, like it will keep you safe and like it will last for a while. Very impressed by the Renegade

What were you expecting? Jeep's lineage is Military. Also pretty sure if you looked up the word Renegade in the dictionary it would not be "parse, restrained, elegant and European".

Here, i'll do it for you:

noun ren·e·gade \ˈre-ni-ˌgād\
1 : a deserter from one faith, cause, or allegiance to another
2 : an individual who rejects lawful or conventional behavior

that about summed it up for me as well. I know size is very subjective, but to me its small. I know a lot of people say it feels/seems big, but to me its not. I test drove a Buick Encore as well and they are pretty much the same size. The TrailHawk I drove just seemed very cheap. Loud wind noise on the highway, and the interior looks better in pictures than it does in person. Perhaps I should have driven it before the Encore...

I wanted to love the Renegade, but for the money you can definitely do better. I'm now leaning more towards the GMC Terrain or Mazda CX-5.

Sorry kj11, but I've gotta ask;

Anyone else find that the GMC Terrain reminds them of the National Lampoon's Vacation Truckster? >:D
All the GMC needs is wood paneling.

I can't be alone in thinking that too many SUV's out there are too big. The size of the Renegade it just right if you ask me. It's much better looking than any of the competitors its size.

I'm with you, I strongly dislike very large SUV's for a variety of reasons. The Renegade TH stands alone in both size and functionality. I said it felt big, but it's the height mostly (and especially with the TH) that still throws me. I think it feels bigger than it actually is. This is really the only SUV I considered, with the other choices being a subaru wagon or just sticking with another VW GTI or Golf.

I don't dislike large SUVs, but rather the jerks that think just because they have a very large SUV that they can be king of the road and drive like a maniac. Common courtesy is a foreign (more like out of this world) concept to them.

Well, couldn't get the wood paneling thrown in, but I'm extremely happy with my decision. Not only is the size better than the Renegade, but the ride is infinitely nicer.
So you told us everything you got to say ... you bought US and are a nice Citizen ... now you can get over to a GMC Forum and complain about that Trash you bought over there ... just like it is usual in Forums ... :D>:D
