MotorTrend ran a big test on the Renegade, CX-3, Trax, Juke, XV Crosstrek and HR-V. Follow the link at the bottom to see everything they had to say:

The Jeep Renegade is another ride quality standout. The Renegade's ride is firm yet forgiving. The Renegade will toss its driver around a bit on some severe undulations, but it's never punishing. "Jeeplike" is probably the best way to describe it. At the track, the Renegade lapped the figure eight in a lengthy 28.4 seconds at 0.61 g. Associate online editor Benson Kong said it offered "sharp and immediate braking and steering reflexes." The Trax and HR-V fell somewhere in the middle. The Trax generally had good road manners, though some thought the Chevy exhibited excessive body roll during cornering. The Honda's ride was on the harsher side for a CUV with non-sporting pretensions, but none of us really found it objectionable. The HR-V lapped the figure eight in 28.0 seconds while averaging 0.62 g, and the Chevy took 29.2 seconds at 0.56 g.

Lengthy 28.4 seconds? That's only 0.4 seconds slower than the HRV. That's a tie in my book and fast enough. Sure I'd like a 250 hp engine in the Renegade, but let's not exaggerate to try to make the Renegade look awful.

And the Renegade looks so much better than the other copy-cat-look cars.

^ I agree. I've noticed a few media outlets that have the Renegade compared to the HR-V usually place the Renegade after the HR-V in scoring, but if you look at the scores it isn't by much. To me, that is a tie, except that the Renegade looks so much better and unique that it then places above the HR-V. Again in my opinion.

I would love power too, but I'm OK with getting 30 mpg while I putt around. I don't race the vehicle or feel unsafe when I need power, and yeah... don't even compare looks. The Renegade beats the smack out of all of them. The closest is the CX3 (to me).

I agree!

The final ratings in the article has the Subaru at #1 and Renegade at #3 , but it says if not for the 9-spd automatic issues the Renegade would be the winner. I test drove a Crosstrek and I liked it but not enough to buy. The engine is anemic and I personally don't like CVTs. Interior is functional but very spartan. Overall it's a very good vehicle but for my taste the Renegade is what a small 4x4 utility vehicle should be. I bought the Latitude 4x4 1.4L with 6-speed and I'm very happy with it so far. Too bad MT didn't test the 1.4L 6-spd for the shootout.

And what's with all the focus on millenials? Motor Trend doesn't think people over 30 years old might like a Renegade? Maybe they think we should all be driving Buick LeSabres? (no offense to Buick). I'm 49 and the Renegade fits my needs perfectly -- its looks, cargo ability, interior design, build quality/ruggedness, 4x4 (mostly for snow), smaller size (one car garage plus lots of city driving on narrow patched roads) and even performance/fun factor with the turbo engine and 6-speed.

I've been waiting for Jeep to introduce a vehicle like this (kind of a Wrangler-lite) ever since I saw the original Compass two door AWD prototype (nothing like the Compass that came to market). Well done, Jeep!

My Wife traded her 2014 Crosstrek in on her Renegade Trailhawk. When asked about her Crosstrek, her response was "it's OK". When asked about her Renegade her response is "I LOVE IT".

If only...

I'm 41. I love my TrailHawk. My ONLY complaint... I wasn't offered a diesel engine. I drive 1k miles a week. My situation is PERFECT for the diesel...

Maybe I can trade my 15 in on a 17 with diesel... By then I'll have 100k miles on it.

I also think the Renegade is much more utility than the other "cute utes" out there. By the way, I'm 64 and got tired of driving look-alikes. I did test drive a Trax. I liked the Renegade better. It gets lots of looks. It is also the only one that is really 4x4 capable.

I agree, the Renegade fits the active empty nester and retiree lifestyle perfectly.

I happened to read that article in the waiting room at the dealership when I was buying my Latitude this week!

I rented a Trax to drive to Disney World from Raleigh back in April. It was OK. It drove nice and handled OK, but only returned about 27 mpg for the whole trip. And the cargo room was severely limited, I had trouble getting the suitcases back there. The Renegade has much more room in the back.

Where's Waldo

I've considered taking pictures of parking lots I park my Renegade in, then posting them as, "Where's ORT?" What I have discovered is that it is VERY difficult to hide an orange renegade in an ocean of blues, silvers/greys, blacks, and "champagnes".

As my 4 year old daughter and I walked out of the Mexican restaurant last night, I asked her where it was. She pointed to an orange patch behind a tree and said, "over there silly."

Almost every time I park it somewhere, someone will ask me about it.

It is nice to stand out, after my last couple cars, which were white and silver. It hasn't been this easy to find my vehicle in a parking lot since I was in college, driving a bright red Dodge Dakota Sport.

I also have a 4 year old daughter, and she loves the orange Renegade. Her mom recently got a red Fiat 500, which they both call "Ruby Red." She hasn't named the Jeep yet, thankfully. If she insists that it needs a name, I'll suggest "Zack" due to the VIN starting with ZACC.
