So I was driving my girlfriend’s 2016 1.4t Renegade on the interstate last Thursday when it lost all power but stayed running. It has around 60,000 miles on it. I shut it off and pulled over. I found the tensioner pulley was crooked and serpentine belt broken. We waited 6 hours on the interstate for a tow truck and after the first two canceled we got it towed.
The shop called this morning after replacing the tensioner/pulley and belt and it won’t start. They pulled the cover and saw that the timing belt was missing teeth which was probably the cause for the tensioner pulley and belt to go out. I don’t know much about these engines and haven’t found anything about timing belt failures with them. I’m assuming that when a timing belt breaks in interference engine, the vehicle needs a new engine? Has anybody ran into this?
