what are people using as far as roof mounted tents?

im 6'2 and say 250lb

I know this conversation has been had here before... but the Owner's Manual says that "[t]he load carried on the roof, when equipped with a luggage rack, must not exceed 150 lb (68 kg)."

And that rootop tent you're looking at already weights 43 kg (almost 95 lb) all by itself.

Of course, a lot of people have apparently used roof tents. I'm not sure if static load -- when the Renegade is standing still -- might be higher.

The ladder would support some of the weight of the tent, you, and your other stuff.

But something to consider...

supposedly the 150lb limit is when the vehicle is moving. thats why i am trying to find out. since most vehicles are rated at 150lbs . makes it confusing

Our other two cars are both 2009 VW Jettas. Maximum roof load on those is 165 lb (75 kg). The Owner's Manual specifies that that includes the weight of the rack plus the load.

Maybe the 150-lb limit on the Renegade is because of the structure of the roof rails...

I'm not sure if either one is effective, but it's a starting point for my research.

I agree. Besides the roof-load issue, roof tents seem to be losing their appeal.
