Wrangler - no discounts
Cherokee Trailhawk and Grand Cherokee only $500 discount
Renegate could have discount of Wrangler or Grand Cherokee
If you need it now there is no point waiting for maybe only $500 discount.
You are right on first model year quirks.
I didn't say Wrangler. Wrangler hasn't come full circle under Fiat yet either and neither has the Grand Cherokee. In other words, how the current models are made could be quiet costly for going any discounts. However, if they move plants out of the U.S. , put extensive packages together to expand profits like the Renegade, 500, and Cherokee, that could change.

My thoughts are this:

The same options in a Cherokee will bump the price of said Cherokee. The Cherokee weighs more and will also be a bit slower, if that matters.

A Trailhawk Renegade starts at 26,990. Tops out at 32,580. For. Every. Option.
A Trailhawk Cherokee, without v6, starts at 30,090. Tops out at 40,663. For Everything but the v6. With the v6, that bumps it to 42,328.

And the options available on both are nearly identical, except the v6. FWIW, I'd go with the Renegade if it were my choice. Not to mention the fact that despite the smaller engine, the Renegade might be able to do more than the Cherokee off-road, simply due to the entry/break-over/exit angles.

The Cherokee's rear hatch, without being able to open up that rear window individually, leaves soemthing to be desired because of the angle there. It'll limit your box-carrying abilities anyway; and on paper, there's not much difference.

. . . I felt like the Cherokee was too big and the windshield was too slanted. . .
That's the appeal of the Renegade (at least for me). A nice small vehicle that actually resembles a Jeep. The Cherokee headlight styling just doesn't work for me.

I agree. The Cherokee looks great until you get to the nose.... Then it goes all Pontiac Aztec on me.
Aztec... that's putting it kindly. To me the only passable version of the Cherokee is the TH trim. The lines just don't flow; like the kink just aft of the mirror in the front window sills. The rear end proportions are out of whack; a blank wall with glass and lights sprinkled here and there. Overall, it looks like a toad, just hanging out on a lily pad waiting for something to fly by. The styling is just too incoherent and designed by committee. It's a mess. Neither a Jeep, nor a Chrysler. About the only thing tying it to the Jeep brand is the 7 slat "grille". And it's a weak link at that.

With that said, I'm glad Jeep is able to find buyers for it. A healthy Jeep brand means other models are more likely to be made. It's just not something I'd be willing to go $40k deep for.

Because some of us are tired of larger and want to go smaller. Easier parking, easier turning and the Renegade looks cooler.
Yes, the Renegade looks different than other autos out there, the Cherokee looks like all other SUVs. Yes the Renegade was for my wife and the 2 dogs. Its too much hassle putting dogs in the Hellcat she drives.

.......^^^^^^^
.........That's it.

You will recognize a Renegade as soon as you see one. I like that in a car. And The Renegade is very good looking for a small SUV.

It's the same with my Challenger; nothing else on the road looks like it (maybe the 1971 Challenger but there won't be many of those on the road).
