Hi Everyone,

We purchased a Renegade last Monday, 5/11 - the vehicle was "in transit" to the dealership at the time and we were supposed to take delivery Friday, 5/15. That was then changed to Monday, 5/18, as it hadn't yet made it to the dealership. On Monday, I was notified by the salesman that there was a hold on the vehicle (being held wherever the train unloads them in Denver) due to a VIN mismatch, and that they were working with some "higher ups" at Chrysler to resolve the issue. Our deliver date has since been moved to this Friday, 5/22 at the earliest.

I just got off the phone with a Jeep representative in their call center. She suggested that there have been several Renegades with the VIN mismatch, and that they just have to fix it before we take delivery. Has anyone else heard of this happening? Our first payment is coming up soon and we may not have anything to show for it!

Yes, I’ve heard of it happening because it happened to me. It wasn’t exactly the same situation as what happened to you though. In your case, it sounds like a dealership/auto maker screw up. And it’s totally up to them to resolve it. Considering your first payment that’s due shortly: explain to the bank what happened and see what they suggest.

A VIN no. mismatch happened to me but it was between the dealership and myself. I took delivery of a newly ordered car (not a Jeep and this was some years ago) after a four month wait. I discovered a couple of days later that the VIN no. on my title did not match the VIN no. on the car. It was a hassle getting it resolved. I had to get the title corrected at the dealership, the state’s dept. of motor vehicles, and the insurance co.

A U.S. VIN no. consists of 17 characters. Pos. 1-11 of the VIN no. consists of identifying coded information: the auto maker, model, model year, and destination country in which it’ll be sold as new. Pos. 12-17 is a 6 digit serial no. If the mismatch occurs in pos. 1-11, it’s not too big a hassle to get it corrected and luckily that’s where my error occurred.

Moral: You gotta watch those dealers. Make sure the VIN no. on the title matches the VIN no. on the car. Don’t sign anything unless it does. And good luck.

Hello Jack,
Can you please tell us more about the sales hold and the software problems?

Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said some new Jeep Renegade subcompact crossovers are being withheld from dealers because of software problems.
Here is a thread you can reply at:

I just bought a Trial Hawk and love it. No mechanical issues. But i do have an issue with my VIN #. 1st problem i had was with my insurance company. They said that my VIN did not exist. That got resolved and i got insured. 2nd problem was registering it. The Renegade was so new that they have no record in the books they use. That got resolved and i am registered. The 3rd Problem that i am having is with Uconnect. I went to there website and typed in my VIN to see if there is any software updates and it says VIN is incorrect and does not match. I then called Uconnect and told them my problem. When the searched for my VIN it was there but when they typed it in to see if it would word they got the same error message. I was told that there is a problem with some VINs not matching. How do i fix this issue? Should i call Jeep and tell them my problem? Has anybody else had this issue?

I would definitely call Jeep AND your dealership. I haven't attempted registering with Uconnect yet, but I'll let you know if I have the same issue.

How can you be making payments on a car not delivered ?
I financed through my bank, so I closed on the loan before the vehicle arrived at the dealership and they just gave me the check to take to the dealer. So, the loan's effective date was a week and a half before we received the vehicle.

VIN Issue Thread

Having a bit of trouble insuring my Renegade Trailhawk. The car came with a card indicating that it was among a number of Renegades that came with a superfluous digit in the VIN. I believe it has an extra zero. The insurance company tried running the VIN with and without the zero, and neither shows up. They did give me a certificate of insurance, so I'm OK if I get pulled over. I haven't received my title yet, so I don't know if I'll have a similar problem trying to register the vehicle. The card that came with the car indicates I should keep it with the vehicle in case I need to explain the strange VIN. Not a major issue right now, but definitely slowing down the process of "officially" insuring the car. Anyone else have a similar situation?

Had the same problem. Jeep provided a letter explaining the 9th digit should have been a letter, not a zero. Insurance company issued coverage. Jeep said to keep a copy with the registration. Then got a call from the Dealer. They picked up the TH and updated the computer. State Inspection recognized it. All is well. Have 600 miles on it. Love it.
