So I was astonished to learn that my 6 month premium only dropped $9 when I switched from my 2015 Mustang GT to the Renegade. I pay around $76/mo. for full coverage and $1000 deductibles. Full disclosure, the vehicle is insured as pleasure vehicle and I only drive about 5-6k annually (work from home). That said, I pay about $10 more a month for the Renegade than I did for my 2014 JKU.

I've been wondering about insurance lately. Will it cost more to insure a Trailhawk over a Limited/Latitude 4x2?
I don't think so, not at least with my experience.

When I was quoting, well before I made the purchase, Geico didn't have the Renegade listed on their site as a Jeep vehicle. I had to call them with a VIN number... gave them one I pulled from the dealership's website of a FWD Latitude and they actually quoted me $81 per month. When I finally called in to make the change official, and provided the VIN from my TH, it was less than the original quote for the FWD.

Mine was only about $10/mo more than the 2000 Avalon that my Trailhawk replaced. Also, about $10/mo less than my 2008 Liberty. Almost identical billing to my wife's 2014 Cherokee.

Obviously in insurance, everything is relative, but they look at it being pretty close to on par with these others.

We pay 294 for 6 months on the Renegade Trailhawk. That's 23 more than the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek that was traded in on it. Our 2014 Wrangler Rubicon is 220 for 6 months. Oddly, the Wrangler is one of the cheapest vehicles to insure. This is through GEICO.

$95/mo down from $117 in a '13 veloster
allstate insurance w/ drivewise installed in car.

side note on the drivewise. basically you try to stay below 80, and don't slam on breaks if you want top amount of discount. but you automatically get 10% just to have it plugged in. and it records where you car is if ever stolen and records all info when an accident happens. makes filing a claim hella easier.

I pick up my Latitude 4x4 2.4L (auto, remote start, keyless, nav, and cold weather) today. Sticker $27,795.

Replacing my 2012 VW Jetta SE 2.5L (manual, leather, cold weather, stereo upgrade with iPod/USB input, maybe something else I'm forgetting was an option). Sticker $22,500.

My payments went down $25 per 6 months. I was very pleasantly surprised about that last night talking to Progressive to authorize the policy change.

EDIT: Oh, a funny one I forgot to mention, they didn't have anything for the Jeep Renegade in the system and they had to look up the symbols and enter them manually. I can't be the first person with Progressive insurance to buy one of these things! Anyway, hopefully the symbols (whatever they are) are now in the system :)

You have to consider: safety and liability (Renegade is a smaller vehicle, which is inherently more likely to result in death claims in a severe accident), parts availability (Renegade is built overseas...parts are rare and hard to get and also expensive compared to Wrangler), body shop labor rates (Renegade would be more difficult to disassemble and repair than Wrangler), etc. Try to look at it from the point of view of the insurance company... it would cost them more to handle a Renegade crash repair, therefore premium is higher.

Wranglers and Mustangs are a dime a dozen, simple, and easy to repair.

Add to that things that don't impact insurance, like the problems you might have to deal with involving a lot of back and forth to the dealer and it just might make sense to hold off on buying a Renegade now. As time goes on things will improve.
