What other vehicles did you (actually) consider?

I was just curious what other vehicles people considered when they bought the Renegade, or while they are still in the process of deciding. There are a lot of "vs." threads and discussions, here and elsewhere, but do Renegade shoppers also consider cars like the Soul and HRV that keep getting compared with the Renegade? Was it a choice between the Renegade and something larger? Or did some of you not even go shopping for other cars?

For me, hearing about the Renegade last year is what set me shopping for a car in the first place. While I was waiting for them to show up on dealer lots, I started considering these:

Ford Escape--Probably would not have been interested in it, but the end of 2014 models were so temptingly priced.
Jeep Cherokee--liked everything about it except the exterior appearance.
Subaru Forester--liked it a lot on paper but just couldn't get enthusiastic about driving it.

2013/2014 Lexus 400H -- there are a couple of deals on used ones with less than 30k miles, and the MPG is nice... but the repair costs would be higher, no "lifetime" MaxCare Mopar warranty, & it wouldn't be as fun for light offroading. Definitely the "next best" fit for me though.

Also looked at various Wranglers, but I like to take 2000+ mile roadtrips a couple of times a year.

Test drove a Juke, an Mazda CX 5, and a couple of BMWs.

Walked up to some Subarus, but noped right off the lot without test driving anything.

Nothing fit like a glove, the way the Renegade does.
Honda CRV, Mazda CX-5, VW Tiguan, Subaru Forester. Flirted with the idea of Ford Escape, but never went for a test ride.
Actually none. I would have kept my 2009 Dodge Challenger if the Renegade didn't come out.

There isn't another car out there that I like the looks of enough to want to buy it. Certainly not a car that has the headlight lens wrapped back around the side of the fenders. I can't stand that look, sorry.
I also test drove a Cherokee. The Renegade had more personality, though :)
No others for me either. I had been waiting for the Renegade. Was waiting for Jeep to finally come out with something that I liked as much as my XJ and the Renegade was just that.

If it didn't exist I probably would have spent tons of money for more repairs and a new paint job for my ancient XJ.
I loved this Nissan but after the reviews i decided to get the jeep instead

Good question....long answer....
My first choice was actually the Honda Element AWD some years back, but it was discontinued several years ago. My wife and I liked the "utility" nature in that it was designed to get dirty and hosed out, etc.
It was small enough to be semi nimble, get decent mileage, and be used for camping, photo shoots, and general good times. At the time the CRV was my next choice but really didn't like it so we waited.
My wife started liking the looks of the SOUL, but it didn't have enough "ruggedness" for my taste and I wanted something with AWD/4WD due to recent 2wd "mishaps" requiring tow straps. We were aware of the Renegade, but it kept being delayed and seemed like a distant dream.
We eventually changed our train of thought and bought a new Grand Cherokee 4x4 last year to replace our larger vehicle (Chevy Astro). We needed decent tow capacity (6000+) and we looked at other mid-sized SUVs (Ford, Toyota, etc) and the Jeep was the only thing that came close with the tow capacity, features, quality 4x4 system, etc.
Once we bought the GC we really were thinking of getting a small car or something very fuel efficient, but we both LOVED the GC so much we still kept our eye on the Renegade. We also were considering the SOUL and the Ford Escape, all in 2wd since we already had the 4x4 GC. My wife eventually decided and really pushed us getting the Renegade, and in 4x4, stating that she could see us swapping vehicles at times with me using the Renegade for photo jobs and she using the GC for her business. Once we made this decision, all other models were dropped from the list and we went full speed ahead for the Renegade. We both liked the looks, the features, and of course the Jeep 4x4 abilities.
Being a computer nerd for over 30yrs, I was well aware of the potential issues of buying the first model of a new generation anything. Add to this the Italian origin and potential issues with parts, I had/have my concerns, but so far so good. Being a huge Ferrari fan, being Italian isn't really a quality issue in my view, but more of an availability issue. I worry that one day I'll wait 3 months for a $500 starter coming from Italy.

Nissan Juke Nismo RS until I read some lackluster reviews. Then I just decided to go something rugged but comfortable.

I was also quite attached to my XJ! I gave it to a family member, so it is still sharing the driveway with the new Renegade. They're a lot more similar in size and feel than I realized at first.

I was originally looking at a Subaru Outback or XV Crosstrek but hadn't gotten that serious about either one. Had a friend come over in his Patriot and that was the vehicle that I was pretty set on until I was strongly advised to look at the Renegade over the Patriot. I liked the exterior of the Patriot but the Renegade has definitely grown on me. After test driving the Renegade I was sold and placed an order.
I was in the Audi A3, Subaru STI (older hatch), Mazdaspeed 3, Ford ST - I moved from a 2 door mod'd mini so I wanted 4 doors for the kiddos, still fun factor and need to get my ice hockey goalie gear in it so I needed the hatch. Then I ran into the rene - it was a perfect size, blend of everything I needed......I loved the extra space over the others. The only thing is I had to give up my manual transmission.....I do miss it, more then I thought i would.
We looked at the Cherokee but the interior actually is more cramped and less visible for me as the driver than the Renegade. We considered Subaru CrossTrek as well but Subarus are kind of boring to us.

Having a manual transmission is at the top of the priority list for us as well as good MPG and 4X4 capability. There really aren't many vehicles to choose from that have all 3 of these and the Renegade just looks and feels better than anything else with these attributes. Our current main vehicle is the original first year Toyota FJ Cruiser with stick shift and we have about 140,000 miles on it - still going strong but MPG is 17 average and rear seating is way more cramped and there are no dedicated doors for the second row which is a pain for a family of 4. We do love the FJ though and having that as the second vehicle with Renegade as the first vehicle will be awesome!
Ok I'll bite.

Always liked Jeep but somehow never got around to getting one (at the time, eons ago, I couldn't afford it). Eventually went with a cheap Mazda (ugh), then Hyundai. But that Jeep ghost is still knocking on my door. (Especially the Wrangler ghost). I always wanted a Wrangler but with more features and a bit more modern looking and a bit better on gas. This is why I really liked the early Jeep Liberty Renegades. But like I said, one thing after another and it never happened. (spouse, 2 nieces, sis-in-law, etc increased cargo space). lol Currently I like the Grand Cherokee since in my opinion it has the best looking SUV. (The Toyota Highlander was the best looking, but that was before they messed up the styling in the current models).

The Grand Cherokee to me is a step up to the Santa Fe (which I own) but it also is a major step up in price (as well as the Highlander). Way beyond my budget to be honest. The smaller Cherokee is similar to the Santa Fe, but I just do not like the front. All three are way to big now (some family moved out, so its only 4 of us). Honda and especially the CRV/HR-V, I can't stomach at all. The Crosstek is nice but not as tall as I would have liked. Everything else on the road similar to the Renegade seems over-rated and or not capable (to my needs).

Now to be honest, Hyundai has been bombarding me with incentives left and right. So it may be a fight between the new Santa Fe Sport or the Renegade 2016/17 model. (I do love the fact that the new Sonatas have Android Auto, but that vehicle is too low in height for me anyway). But even with incentives, rebates etc the Renegade is still cheaper, is a Jeep, can do soft trail (if I get the Trailhawk) and is a bit better in mileage.

Plus I'm also tired of being a typical 9 to 5 zombie, having to conform to the ritual of home-work only life and getting a big car for everyone and their mother. Its time to live a bit and get something that is still big enough for the reduce in size family but raises the bar in my enjoyment of driving and traveling and FINALLY quenches my thirst for a Jeep.

Will my opinion change by the time I decide to get on? Maybe, but right now it is 99.5 % Jeep Renegade as my replacement.

I hear you, twospirits! I still have that feeling that I will one day get a Wrangler. In my case, I have no practical reason to have one; I've just always loved them.

I hadn't heard anyone mention the Hyundai as vehicle they were considering along with the Renegade. I hadn't paid attention to the Hyundai at all (though I remember test driving one before I got my first Jeep around the turn of the century), so I did a search. It's a great looking vehicle, I think! It looks like it's comparable to a Cherokee without the "controversial" front end. I wonder if it's fun to drive.

The same is so true for me also! In the back of my mind have always wanted one, & so excited it is finally happening! (even though not a Wrangler) I think I will love my Rene & now am thinking that eventually I'd like to pick up an Old Willy to play with.....

I also liked the look of the Juke & test drove one of those, but the inside looked really cheap to me & I'm 5'5" & like to sit high. With the seat all the way up to where I like to sit, my head brushed the top of the vehicle. So, was then going to look for a used 2012 Escape since I like my current 2001 so much (do NOT like the style of the newer ones!) But.... then..... I found the Renegade existed! BAM... the rest is history....
I went thru quite a list in my search.
Mazda cx5
Mitsubishi Outlander
Subaru Forester (My wife has a 2015 Premium)
Subaru Crosstrek
Nissan Juke
BMW X3 (Older Models)
Porsche Cayenne (Older Models)

I had 7 Subaru before and work for Subaru of America. So the drive to go back to Subaru was pretty strong. I found the Renegade by mistake really. Just happen to see one on a Chrysler lot and got curious.

After driving it and seeing the styling I was sold. I traded my Forester XT turbo in for it the next day.
I actually started looking last year before I'd heard about the Renegade. The only reason I started looking was because gas was over $4/gallon here. My commute to work is 40 miles a day and considering the gas mileage my Wrangler JK gets (or doesn't get in this case, LOL), I was wanting more fuel economy. Looked at the Subaru Crossteks, but it was just so hard to give up Damien (my JK's name). Then gas started going down and there was news that we were moving offices so my commute would only be about 10 miles roundtrip by the end of this year. So I backed off looking.

Then the Renegades came out. I loved the fact it was Jeep, got better gas mileage, could still do off road if I wanted to, etc. Started researching them and when the local dealer got one, I went for a test drive and liked it. I decided that since it would be a new car, it'd be my last for at least 5-7 years and I was going to get what I wanted on it. My only dislike (and it's kind of a temporary one) is that it's so low. After driving a 2" lifted JK with off road tires, it's kind of hard going to something short, LOL! As soon as some good lift kits come out and I have the money, my TH will be getting one and bigger tires.

If this was tl;dr, long story short, briefly just the Subaru Crosstek :D
