Wind Noise - Solved

As some of you know, my car has been in service for 1 month now. Today, Dan of Route1USA and a field technician from FCA were able to find out what the "whistling" noise was on my Renegade. The bottom, side and top of the door has holes presumably for water drainage. During cross-winds, those holes allow air through them. This is because the seal underneath but exterior to the door (running panel thinger) is weak. They covered those holes up with tape and poked a little hole, and the sound is now gone.

I will wait for higher speed crosswinds and stuff to be 100% sure, but the highway whistling , without cross wind is pretty much okay.

Hm. Sounds like a design oversight.
Yep. Spoke with the shop foreman. He said FCA likely did not test any type of situation with a crosswind, because it's very reproducible with the other Renegades on their lot. Probably just wind test from the front. No idea...
Can you post a picture of the holes that were taped shut? I'm sure many of us want to check our doors.

Don't forget. It's "special wind quieting tape which prevents rust".

Yup. With all the other known issues out of a very small pool of cars now in the US (and how FCA is handling them), it's looking more and more like there will be no Jeeps in my future.
I have attached two pictures showing the patented drain tape. They taped over the drain holes, as wind was going up through the bottom drain holes which resulted in wind noise. I can attest it did indeed cure the symptoms. However, I obviously don't approve of covering of drain holes. Water remains in the door, and now we hear a sloshing of liquid when closing the door.

They alleged that "poking small holes" in the tape would help water drain. I had inquired about this when we took it back. However, the tiny bits of plant material have clogged this up. Really I should have asked, if it was designed to be taped...why are there holes in the door to begin with? El-Oh-El.

Built in whistle, sometimes used for drainage. Doors hold water so when you get thirsty, you can quench by using a crazy straw through your drain hole.

Great fix. *sarcasm*

I do not endorse this fix. FCA approved this and I think it's garbage.

The Renegade will be back at the dealer today. This is absolute rubbish. Won't be accepting a fix that will result in premature rust perforation.

That round hole at the top should have a black plastic cushion-type plug in it... check your other doors. My driver's door is missing it, the other three doors aren't.

I mean, Christ on a bike, what is going on with quality control over in Melfi?!

Oh! I wonder if that was done intentionally, anyone have the service manual or subscription?

Thanks,

My drivers door has one. FWD Latitude. So, unless you have a TH and it is intentional for some reason, you probably should have one. I have slight wind noise on mine, but I don't notice any more. The only thing I do notice is that there must not be as tight of a seal as my last vehicle, because if I drive by a stinky place and have recycled air on, I can still smell it inside my Renegade which shouldn't be the case.
Interesting, the door microfiche lists part 13http://www.jeeprenegadeforum.com/forum/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=13 as a "bumper". See door on dealer MOPAR site - http://www.jerryulmdodgechryslerjeepram.com/parts-accessories/shop.htm

This is part number 68256508AA that is missing on my driver door only.

I wonder why it is missing on the driver door...

My Trailhawk doors have the rubber bumpers. Have your dealer remove all the tape and install the rubber bumper in any door that is missing it.

It's hard to believe that the dealer would put tape over those holes. Couldn't they look at another Renegade to see if something other than tape belongs there?

Maybe it's time to find another dealer before you need any service work.

I see. The bumper effectively blocks air from going in or out of that top hole. I swapped the rear passenger door bumper to the driver side. I removed the tape to do this. Made little to no difference, verified on the same road with stethoscope.

It is peculiar that it is missing on all the Renegades on the lot though. I will order a couple and put em in there none the less since it's nicer than tape.

Still has a VERY slight whistle at certain speeds since they opened the drain hole tape up a little more.

Only missing on driver's door? Maybe because when shipped is the only door that can be opened without breaking the "transport sticker".
In the following photo can be seen the stickers on tailgate and rear doors (Civitavecchia port Renegade ready to be shipped to North America).

Hi,
I am Eric from The Netherlands and been driving a Renegade 1.4 Multiair since November 2014.
In the top of the door is a rubber stop.
In the 3 bottom holes they have welded a small plate which leaves an opening in the top of the hole.
See attached pictures.

Wow, that is new to me. I wonder if our US models have/will get this. Does your door make any whistling around that area?

This wouldn't happen to be Bakersfield Jeep/ Fiat/ Chrysler would it? This is standard issue for them.
