1.3T head gaskets

I've had my 2020 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk at the dealership Since October. It's going on close to 3 months without my vehicle. The water pump failed causing it to overheat. In turn the head gasket blew. They are waiting on a cylinder head that is on back order. I can't believe how many parts end up on national backorder for this Jeep. This is my first Jeep product and I like it, but this is ridiculous. I bought it new and have done all the service at the same dealer....

Sorry to hear that, having a 2021 Trailhawk with the same engine.

It doesn't seem like blowing a head gasket would destroy the head itself...

I do see the head on back-order at a lot of sources. But these guys have it in stock for $408... 68708207AA - Genuine Mopar HEAD-CYLINDER

Seems like a pretty-good price...
I'll let the dealer know. Thank you.

Still no cylinder head. FCA customer service just keeps saying "I want to inform you that the Parts team are still working to have parts expedited for you. I will be giving you some more updates in a few days.". The service writer continues to update me but it's the same thing. How can so many parts for these vehicles be on national backorder with no ETA

Still no resolution.
Wow. Have you actually been calling Customer Care -- Elizabeth at 844-827-1926 ext 5140895?

And at least that one Jeep dealer still has a cylinder head available:

68708207AA - Mopar Parts Giant

It's $2,225.15, which is more like what I'd expect. Not sure why I was seeing $408 before... Maybe that was just the gasket.

Your dealer can't do a dealer-to-dealer transfer...?

#23 ·
Glad to hear that. As far as I understand, that's a common procedure among dealers. Wonder why it wasn't so common here...?

What additional cost? Is your dealer being charged the retail price??

And since My Traihawk has the same engine, but a year newer... Any info as to why your water pump failed so soon?

Why did the blown head gasket destroy the head itself?

And didn't you get a high engine temperature warning...?

No explanation on the failure. The overheating I'm sure warped the head. I wasn't sure why they couldn't mill it, but information hasn't been very forthcoming. I personally feel if the diagnosis had been done correctly in first place, it wouldn't had resulted in a blow head gasket/cylinder head.

In both case the the dash lit up notifying me the vehicle was overheating and went into limp mod.

I just talked with a former VW technician at the trusted indy shop where I now take all our vehicles (except for warranty or recall work).

He said that, contrary to what I'd thought, dealers are very reluctant to do dealer transfers of parts from other dealers. Certainly not giving discounts for doing so.

So that would explain why it was so tough to get the dealer in danebergman's case to get th cylinder head from that other dealer... Until apparently Jeep made them do it (and probably paid the premium)...

Yep. No aftermarket options for the oil filter. MOPAR only.
Well there is this for $5.28 -- if you trust it: Amazon.com: ECOGARD X11834 Premium Spin-On Engine Oil Filter for Synthetic Oil Fits Jeep Renegade 1.3L 2019-2021 | Fiat 500X 1.3L 2019-2020 : Automotive

But Mopar oil filters are available from Amazon for $26.26...

The Mopar filters from dealers list for $16.65, but are available for less -- like $11.90: Search Results | My Mopar Parts

I'm willing to pay that price.

At least air filters are available.
Yup. They used to be crazy expensive, and only available from Jeep (the replaceable ones); so much so that I was ordering in multiples from the UK.

But now they seem to have come down in price -- list $25.00, available for $17.85: 2019-2025 MOPAR Air Filter 68377763AA | My Mopar Parts

I can live with that.

Well the dealer notified me of the following.-

"Moparparts cancelled the order without telling us. It was reordered and we have a new tracking number and it's coming from Sherwood CA and says it will be at the Dodge store hopefully by Friday..

"My parts advisor had to call them because he was tracking it to be here sooner than this and they said it was a clerical error."

Jeep/FCA seriously needs to get it together.

new cylinder head did not come with the dowels installed and new head bolts.
Well, at least the new head is there.

Unless the dealer sells it to someone else in the meantime...

By the way, I had a nice talk with the parts guy at my Jeep dealer last week. He said that it's completely up to the parts managers at different dealers, and the personal relationships they've got with one another, as to whether they'll do an inter-dealer transfer.

Particularly challenging if the part is in short supply...

Tracking shows the dowels will arrive on the 19th. I had to request that they replace the spark plugs. Warranty won't cover them, but the service advisor said he would sell them to me at cost. So they would have removed my plugs from the original head and transferred them into the new head. It takes less time to grab a new set of plugs and install them. I know if I didn't ask they would reuse mine....

I had to request that they replace the spark plugs.
Why?

And I don't understand... Did they sell you new spark plugs (at cost), or remove the old ones to put them back? If the old ones, then why did you have to replac them?

Yeah... I wonder if that means new suppliers. Normally when parts are modified (at least with Volkswagen), they just put a new suffix on the end...

I wanted new spark plugs. At close to 60,000 miles if find it pointless to not replace them.
It takes less labor to install a new set vs. swapping them from my original cylinder head. Plus with the issue having been a blown head gasket who knows what kinda shape the plugs were in.
It's just me. If I was doing the work myself, I would never reinstall the used plugs.

So had to stop by the dealer to exchange the loaner car. Checked on the Renegade while I was there. Very concerned by the rust on the cylinder walls from being left outside with the cylinder head off.

My Service Writer called me back and assured me the rust on the cylinder walls will be addressed. They are going to have it detailed when the work is done.

I also asked about the warranty on the repair itself. He claimed it was a 2 year/unlimited mile warranty. If the head gasket blew again, or catastrophic engine failure I was covered. I really would like to see that if writing. I felt a little better after the conversation.

Yikes. That was your Renegade after all that time? o_O

I'm not sure I'd expect them to pull it inside every night for all that time. But I would expect some minimal weather protection...

I do wee the blue plastic ovr the passenger window. What's up with that?

Good luck! At least you have your warranty!

Oh, wait...

The head gasket does not appear blown in that photo. More troubling is that it's still on the block as if the tech did not remove it to inspect it, or to test the block for straightness (flatness). The tech could have reinstalled it after inspecting it, but that not likely.

Your in a bind with no easy solutions. Let them do whatever they're gonna do, and then move on. You have a bad dealership and probably a bad tech, judging from the pig-pen working style. You may have a poorly QC'd engine too. It happens. I'm sorry the auto business has gone so far downhill.
