Glow plugs or relay

Yesterday for the 1st time in 9 years I have an error icon that could be cause for concern.

The glow plug icon is momentarily flashing for around 10 seconds and then intermittently maybe x2 over a 2 hour period.

The 2015 Jeep Renegade 4x4 diesel Longitude has shown no adverse driving conditions.

I am unsure if 1 or more glow plug could be showing wear and tear or maybe all of them.

Then again it could be the glow plug relay behind the battery.

Any thoughts?

Yeah Marek, changing x4 and the relay is certainly my way forward.

For me there is no point in messing around, especially with all the battery issues that people are experiencing. In this instance I know for 100% certainty it's not the battery.

A concern will be taking out the glow plugs and experiencing one that has stuck to the engine block. Break it and it means drilling it out and metal filings entering the engine block. If that happens the cylinder head needs to come off and thats a **** load of money.

Hmmm not a code, just the lit coil sign and then it goes off within 10 seconds.

It's due an MOT (UK) within the next 4 weeks and it's now booked into the garage for Friday morning. The relay will be replaced first for the sake of a few ÂŁÂŁÂŁs and if the icon doesn't light up then all is well. If not it's onto the glow plugs.

To be fair this is the first fault/repair in 9 years other than tyres and brakes. That's a good run I have had for a Jeep that people often complain about.

A scan revealed No 3 glow plug was defective. ... I dropped the Jeep off on Thursday at Noon, for an am. start on Friday.
I've never had a diesel, so I don't know... But isn't replacing a glow plug about as "complicated" as replacing a spark plug? Why'd you need to have a garage do it?

And, like spark plugs, is it best to replace all of them if one is bad?

Having never swapped out a glow plug and it likely is as easy as changing a spark plug I wasn't taking any chances in the 1st instance of breaking one of them.

the garage have the tools and the electronics to identify what the defect was and I'm happy at the price I paid. ÂŁ40 for parts and labour thereabouts to have the fault diagnosed and fixed is hardly breaking the bank.

Just replaced all 4 of mine - Bosch GLP196, 0250403011 is the part number. These are identical to the ones fitted from new.

You'll need a 9mm deep socket (1/4" socket set is plenty big enough as these shouldn't be very tight). Gave them a squirt of WD40 the day before and they came out dead easy. Only number 3 had failed, but thought it best to replace all. Our Rene has done 80K miles and I was expecting more of a struggle to get them out, but they just sailed out. Tightened finger tight then a quarter turn at most. Should equate to about about 20Nm. Cleared the codes and the "jobsagoodun" as they say.
